I am just viewing on TV Antiques Roadshow about the Dickin Medal for animals in WW2 this gent was showing the awards given to several pigeons was awarded the animals equivalent of the VC . Also two pigeons were taken aboard every RAF Bomber in case they were shot down to send message back to the UK
There was even a National Pigeon Service. Some Pigeons had their own service number prefixed by NPS
French resistance member was even executed by the Germans for using pigeon to send message back to the UK.
