Do you think Adolf Hitler really killed himself? Or could it have been possible that the Soviets were afraid of the propaganda backlash because of not finding Hitler, that they just found a dead body and called it Hitler? What do you think???

I think if Hitler had survived, his death would have been known of afterwards either declared by his surviving comrades or discovered some other way. I think he was truly attached to Germany and Berlin thus chose to be on the stage when the curtain fell.

I really don't think there's any doubt now that Hitler committed suicide on 30th April 1945.

A very good discussion of the historiography of this question, viewing all theories and using the then most up-to-date research, can be found in Anton Joachimsthaler's 'The Last Days of Hitler: The Legends - The Evidence - The Truth '( A&AP, 1996 ).

Definitely I think he died back in 1945.

Unlike several other top nazis Hitler could not live without the nation he had created. Also Mussolini´s end made him sure that he should not leave his body behind for Russians to put it in public.

The bigger question was Bormann but this has been proved by DNA technique that his body was found in Berlin and he died there in 1945.

I must agree that Hitler died in Berlin in 1945. I don't think a megalomaniac like him could have allowed himself to be paraded before the world. He was furious when a black man won an event in the Berlin Summer Olympics. How could he stand that an army with all of the people he thought his "master race" was superior to, had defeated him?

There was a programme on tv about this not long ago. Fascinating stuff, reports of sightings of Hitler were huge news after the end of the war. Many in America (north and south) claimed to have seen him.
I've no doubt that he died in that bunker, it was just that the Russians were slow in showing us any proof that made people's imaginations run wild.

The programme also looked at the Hitler bloodline. His blood relations basicaly all 'steralised' themselves to kill the bloodline off. Can't remember too much, it was a while ago, but it was a riveting watch.

Actually the Russians kept the secret until early 1960´s, I think they released the book on Hitler´s and Eva Braun´s bodies something like 1962. No wonder quite alot of rumours were flying around until then, and to be honest, the book was not really all-revealing so many questions were left even after it was released.

Sure thing. Read it a couple of years ago:

The Death of Adolf Hitler: Unknown Documents from Soviet Archives, by Lev Bezymenski (New York: Harcourt, Brace, and World, Inc.,1968)

The long time the Soviets waited to release the forensic evidence (dental plaques) that the two burnt bodies outside the Chancellery were Hitler and Eva's, and the fact that it was Soviet information (another thing to thank the Cold War for), generated, I think, the many myths.

But the man killed himself in 1945. How much serious evidence of the opposite can be?

What I´ve read on the subject it seems that the Red Army did not know in the first place that the Bunker existed and they did not know where to look for Hitler (?).

Secondly the Red Army Staff in charge tried to make up a story on Hitler´s death (?!) which was not accepted by Stalin and they had to come up with several versions numbered up to three and four until Stalin accepted the theory of the death.

One year later the Bunker staff was gathered at the Bunker to play the actions before and after Hitler´s suicide which was probably filmed. This just shows how uncertain the Russians were of what had happened. They should have had a special crew to look for Hitler in May 1945, as suggested in books later on.

As Friedrich has already stated how much evidence about him surviving is there?? He died in Berlin as did Bormann. Now as for "Gestapo Mueller", well thats another story!

I have read three books on this subject along with tons of articles my conclusion is this -

    1. The actual death of Hitler we will never know did he shoot himself did someone else do it and so on the evidence is so conflicting but one thing is sure Hitler died in the Bunker

    2. After the bodies of Hitler and Eva were placed out side the Bunker the Soviets continued to shell the area for another ten hours

    3. Why did the Soviets move what they believed to be the charged remains of Hitler and Eva all over Germany looks a little suspect that after all they showed the world the remains of Josef Gobbels why not Hitler as well?

    4. The 1945 Soviet investigation was mess so in 1946 Operation Myth was set up by the Soviets to get to the heart of the matter but this investigation has been regarded as a cover up

Well I think the bodies were destroyed in the shelling and due to Stalin being paranoid the investigators had to produce something. I don’t think we will ever get the whole story but it’s an interesting subject.
