Early Surrender

    Joseph Grew, the acting SOS in 1945, suggested that Japan may have surrendered as early as May 1945 - if assurances had been that the emporer would not be removed. This would negate the need for the two bombs or Russia's involvement and would have saved hundreds of thousands of lives.

    Anyone want to give an opinion on this?
