Famous Hitler rally picture probably faked - The Local

The famous 1914 photo showing Hitler in the middle of the crowd at a WW1 rally was most likely faked. Historian Gerd Krumeich has studied the picture and its history and concluded that Hitler was superimposed into the picture to promote the image of the Nazi leader as a patriot and a man of the people. The photo was taken by Heinrich Hoffmann at a rally in support of war in Munich's Odeonplatz in 1914. But it was not published until March 12, 1932 (in the Illustrierte Beobachter, the Nazi party newspaper) after Hitler's patriotism was questioned because he escaped from Vienna to Munich to avoid military service in Austria-Hungary. Interesting. I've always understood that Hoffman was one of Hitler's photog's and when AH mentioned he'd been there he looked for him, based on the general location Hitler gave him.

ETA: Do we have a source for the "other" version? And provenance, of course.

    I shall hunt :)

No - sorry doesn't look like he's published his evidence yet - hopefully he will sometime soon - probably just when the interest in this new museum is dying off.

But it does say the other photo was from the Hoffmann photo archive in Bavaria, with no details though of course.

My lead prof at Purdue, Randy Roberts, always used this pix to end his intro module on WWII. I've sent this along to him, and I pass his thanks along in advance of his reply.

may be jumping the gun a bit - it might even be a publicity hunting stunt with a 'I may have made a mistake' to follow :) we'll maybe see in a few days.

I have to say I don't think it looks much like Hitler in the accepted photo either.

I'll keep Randy informed. He always teaches the WWII class in the Fall (taking the first week to cover the run up), so it's not a hairfire thing right now.

That is a very interesting find Nigel! I remember that Albert Speer commented on the photograph in his book. I guess he was dooped as well if it is indeed a doop.

If it is, it's a fairly good fake in my opinion though. Hitler looked pretty young in it.

I'm told there's film of the event. I've asked the source for more details on that. (Film would be harder to fake, but when you have a government's resources . . . )

Dang, I forgot about that! You are correct OP, I now remember seeing the film on a documentary years ago. I'd check youtube, but my current browser won't let me on.

I recently saw the video footage on the History Channel. I'm not so convinced that photo was faked.

Any hints on the title of the show? The Great War series they put on every few months?

Here's a YouTube clip, but it's really hard to tell. I've looked at it several times and tried comparing it to the still shot, but it's up in the air.

To be honest I have to question the ability to produce a credible fake with early 1930's technology. We are all used to it today, you can find a image of your favorite celebrity doing any kind of naughty things that seem flawless ( not that I have Any first hand knowedge you understand). But then? What does seem possible is that they simply found someone in the crowd who does resemble him, and claimed it was Adolf.

Wasn't there a self-portrait from his Vienna days with the postage stamp moustache?

if that is the same guy as in the still photo though, it looks like it was touched up - the photo looks a lot closer to hitler than the video

still doesn't mean it wasn't him though I guess.
