Blitz firefighter George Wheeler during WWII On the 70th anniversary of one of the Blitz’s most harrowing nights, Farnborough hero George Wheeler, 89, told the Times about how he battled to save the symbolic cathedral as “thousands” of firebombs rained down around him. A convoy of five WWII fire engines were driven through the city of London last Wednesday in memory of the “second Fire of London” on December 29, 1940, which claimed the lives of 16 firefighters and 162 Londoners. My own grandfather was a fireman based in London witness both Blit's that of 40-41 and 44-45 he never spoke to much on the subject due to what he witness and went through. He never fully recovered from the mental scars. Never the less he did his bit on the Home Front along with everyone else.
