Yeah unfortuanatly this theatre of war recieves very little in the way of academic research, it is passed over for the much more 'glamorous' pacific. Slim and the 14th army is hopefully what i am going to write my university dissertation on, i just need to find the information .
Rommel was a General with great tactical skills. Still my favorites are the 2 most influental strategists of WWII: Zhukov & Manstein
Of course you're right, Knight! Rommel was an awesome tactician, but your two favourites were complete strategists! By the way: welcome to the forums!!!
Nice stamps!(??) Rommel in Italia incontro con Jean Pierre Jouvet http://members.xoom.virgilio.it/larchivio/jouvet.htm
Great pics of Rommel--Kai, ive never seen either of them before and never seen him in an overseas cap before either.
Indeed, this was the first pic of Rommel with an overseas cap that I had seen as well so I put it here even if the pic is a bit small.
Thank you again and--now if you could only find one with him wearing an M-43 cap. Also--wny ww1 pics would be nice as well
Try these links a couple of pics of Rommel in WW1 and in the post war Reichwehr: http://www.houseofice.com/images/rommel/rommel10.jpg http://www.houseofice.com/images/rommel/rommel11.jpg
Yes!!! Rommel on skis....He could go for a downhill competition with Dietl... *******! Eisenhower! What have you done?!! ROMMEL'S FIELD MARSHAL BATON: http://www.museumofworldwarii.com/images/TourPictures/12_Rommel%20Baton_lge.jpg Rommel's original baton was given by Gen. Eisenhower to Soviet Marshal Zhukov and is in the Russian Archives. --------------- As well the Monty beret: http://www.museumofworldwarii.com/images/TourPictures/12_Monty03.jpg http://www.museumofworldwarii.com/TourText/Area12_NorthAfrica.htm
Field Marshall Erwin Rommel (center) discusses the upcoming Allied invasion of France with Colonel General Johannes Blaskowitz, commander of Army Group G, and Field Marshall Gerd von Rundstedt. By the way, anyone got a decent pic of the "Mammoth", Rommels armored car in Africa?
Thanks for the pic of Rommels FM Baton--it sure is a beautiful work of art. As the Russians have it--no doubt it will ever be seen elsewhere again. It NEEDS to be back in Germany where it belongs. Thanks for the links for the other artifacts like: that Afrika Korps Canteen, Montys' beret and mini medal bar etc. Back to Rommels Baton. That piece of history is totally priceless. The only thing I can think of that can come close to comparing values with are Hitlers last will and testament, Wolfgang Luths first and spare set of Oak Leaves and Swords (and I know where they permanently reside), Erich Topps Honor Dagger presented to him by Admirals Erich Raeder and Karl Donitz (which was stolen from his home a few years ago by thieves posing as a news crew) , and Der Blucher Stern. Oh and Erich Hartmanns RK, Oaks, Swords and Diamonds that he threw into a river before surrendering to the Russians, as well as Rudels RK, Oaks, Swords, Diamonds and Golden Oaks, Swords and Diamonds. As far as I know--his family still has them
I dont know. I do know that he didnt have more preferance with anything that had a swaz on it. Notice in the vast majority of photographs that Rommel always tries to have his Pour le Merite overlapping his Knights Cross....
Actually, very few of the field marshals used that fancy and heavy batton. They used a much simpler version (which looks simpler than just a batton). Rommel was not the only one. And that he didn't like anything with Swatikas is not a valid arguement. We all know that if he was not a nazi he was well convinced of Hitler's power and leadership at least until 1942... There were some field marshals who simply could not stand the "Bohemian corporal"... Rommel was one of the 'yes' men in the beginning... And that doesn't make him a nazi.
