Mine is definitely 'Stalingrad', starring Thomas Kretschmann of 'U-571' fame... Any seconds on that, or do we feel something different...???
A while back I saw a Czech movie about czechs joining the RAF and fighting the Germans. Very well made movie.... Also another czech movie about life in (now) Czech rep. under nazi rule....Don't ask me for any titles, I can't remember...(Kai? )
The first one is "Dark Blue World". Unfortunately I don´t recognize the second one. Maybe not in Finland yet as I try to see all the films connected with WW2.
Thanks, Kai! Isn't there a thread on that movie somewhere? Now that you mention it, I think I saw that name pass by a few times the last few weeks... I should have that second film on tape somewhere....Hope I can find it and will let you know. All I remember is that the end of the story was that all invoved in the film; the people living in the village, the german soldier just trying to live through the war were all losers. Not as persons, but that is what the war did to them, nobody came out of it a winner... Thanks again, Kai! [ 20. January 2003, 07:45 AM: Message edited by: Stevin Oudshoorn ]
Dark Blue World is a very good film. Luckily I have it on DVD. I have yet to see Winter War . Das Boot is good as well. Also, The Gathering Storm produced by the BBC for HBO was a great movie. CvM
Its too close of a tie to choose but--Stalingrad is one--Dunkirk with Sir John Mills is another and A Password is Courage is my third all-time forign Favorite war movie--this has Dirk Bogarde as British Sergeant major Coward of the Royal Artillery.
I just saw one, but dern it, can't remember the name exactly...."Soldiers Song"? Solder's ballad? It's about a young russian soldier just from the front, trying to make his way back to his mother on a 2-day pass. All in russian with subtitles. Also just saw "Europa Europa". Uh, wouldn't say it's a favorite of mine, a little too artsey, but I can say that it's at least interesting.
Stalingrad is my favourite...without the dubbing over! German language, please! I think I have it on DVD, and two VHS cassettes in case something happens to one tape...Never can be too careful! My father loaned "Pearl Harbor" to our neighbour and somehow he managed to tape volley ball on it...I know, not a big loss but a loss anyway. God, I hate people who do that..Yes, my father AND the neighbour. I´ve forgiven my father though.
Ive got Stalingrad on DVD havent watched it yet as I dont have a DVD player yet--possibly next month. And im HOPING this one isnt dubbed
Stalingrad is fantastic, I hate the dubbing though (even if it is better than most films). I like Europa Europa too. I think my top war movie is the severn samurai, not suropean war but it takes place in the 'age of the counntry at war' (or whatever it is, I can never remember) and is an excellent movie.
Seven Samari for sure!!!! I watched that movie two times in one day (it was cold and snowing, much like today). And the cool thing is that it is what they based the magnificent 7 off of. Also interesting is that Mag. 7 is considered by some to be a pro-vietnam propaganda movie (sacrificing to save the villagers from invaders). But I suppose I should shut the heck off before I go to far off course.
Okay, the above post got me thinking about what war movies steve McQueen has been in . I seem to remember one called "hell is for heros" that I saw on TV when I was a kid. I've been searching for it at rental places and libraries for years, but have never found it. I seem to remember it being pretty good (and also starring bob newheart). Has anyone seen it recently? Think it'd be worth spending a few buck on buying since I can't find one to borrow anywhere?
Man, Doc! It was on TV here a week or so ago! I think it was the BBC... If I'd known, I'd taped it.... bugger...
The other early McQueen that never gets shown on British TV and is not available on DVD/VHS is 'The War Lover' which although not the greatest ever film, includes some brilliant low-level B17 flying by the late Captain John Crewdson. Have they lost the film, or what ?
Martin et al: What was that black and white movie called in which, I believe, Steve McQueen played a Lancaster pilot and, I think, robert Wagner his Co pilot. I only kinda remember the frustration of McQueen ( I think he was cracking up under the pressure or something. Made decisions that raised the frustrations of his co-pilot) and the lancaster flying back, heavily damaged after a raid, only to crash against the white cliffs of Dover.... Or is that the WARLOVER and am I mixing a/c types up? [ 23. January 2003, 11:29 AM: Message edited by: Stevin Oudshoorn ]
That's the one, Stevin ! Only it wasn't a Lancaster, it was B-17s which flew from Bovingdon for the film, which was based on a book by John Hersey.
Thanks Martin...It was only reading this thread that jogged a memory...I saw this film when I was about 8 on a very small, 15 inch B&W TV with a lot of static...
Hi Doc--Hell Is For Heroes is out on VHS and DVD. I spotted the DVD at a place called: Best Buy--but they had it listed for $25,00 which is wayyyyyy toooooo high for a DVD movie. Hell is for Heroes is as classic as a war movie gets. Steve McQueen as John Reece. James Coburn as Corporal Frank Henshaw--the soldier with glasses. Bob Newhart as PFC James Driscoll--the soldier who ran his jeep into a tree. Fess Parker--as Bill Pike the Platoon Sergeant. Nick Adams as Homer Janecazek the Polish D.P/American soldier. Harry Guardino as Sgt Jim Larkin Mike Kellin as Stan Kolinski. Joseph Hoover--as the Company Commander Capt Loomis. Bill Mullikin as PFC Cunberly. Don Haggerty as CPT Mace. L.Q.Jones as Supply Sergeant Frazer. Bobby Darin as PVT Corby. Starts out with McQueen who was transferred to this platoon. He pretty much shirks everyone--not making any friends. Soon they go back to the frontlines--and the rest is history.
"Come and See" by Klimov. Best war movie ever. As for "Stalingrad"; well, yes, it's sorta nice movie - for a German movie. No more, no less. Watched it twice (it's running on TV here all the time), not really a breaker, if you ask me. Cheers,
