    Deserves a wider audience.
"The UK has just appointed its first ever female defence secretary, as Penny Morduant takes over the ministry in charge of Britain's defence.
The move, along with the 100-year anniversary of the Women's Engineering Society (WES), has prompted aerospace giant Leonardo to release archive images of the women who formed some of the first workforce of female engineers in Scotland.
These women played a vital role in the Second World War keeping production lines moving, and the WES feel their contributions are often overlooked.
A factory at Crewe Toll in Edinburgh produced what was described as "the single most important piece of equipment introduced during the war.
Owned by Ferranti, it produced gyro-sights for Spitfires and other fighter aircraft, newly-designed devices which allowed pilots to land shots on target with much greater accuracy.
The very first gyro gun-sights were delivered on 5 December 1943, with a further 26 completed by 1 January 1944, after which production steadily built to 1,000 units per month.
Leonardo’s photo archives confirm that women formed the main workforce of the time, acquiring production and engineering skills which led them to form a solid skills base of female engineers in Scotland.
Many of the women initially employed at the site based at Crewe Toll in World War 2 decided that they wanted to continue developing their skills and since then many generations of female engineers have worked for decades at the company."
