I do love it when people make assumptions - I am not American and what you take from my post is what you read and not what I write, the implication of my words is yours.

Do all Americans fire pistols on the air and really shout yee-ha?

Only at appropriate moments such as New Years, children's parties, bird infestations and Tuesdays.

46 posts & as far as I can see only 2 regarding WW2.

Thought you wanted to discuss WW2 ?

    There's a lot of it about, O.

Wonder if there's a plugin that can display a user's ratio of WW2/Non-WW2 posts.
    That'd be quite funny.

I do love it when a comment flies over someone's head.
Your usage of 'liberal' was the American one, where it's an implication of a core socialist viewpoint. If you think the Liberal Party that Churchill joined was a socialist one as you described, then you're way off-beam. The point that Churchill never really abandoned those 'classical liberal' principles, as expressed as core values of that party at that time, can be fairly readily defended. Even as he shifted specific party allegiances.
That form of liberalism is a large part of why the entire campaign against the axis was pressed home.

    Hence 'taking the piss'.

    And of course they do.
What's the point in being an American otherwise.

Churchill and the British were delighted to get the United States involved in patrolling more of the Atlantic. The deal originally covered only six bases in the Caribbean, the area of particular interest to us; the British generously threw in sites in Bermuda and Newfoundland which were closer to the North Atlantic convoy routes.

Did the British ever seek to regain control of these facilities, or to deploy their own forces there? Several of the US bases were closed after WWII; a few remained operational through the Cold War, which was as much in Britain's interest as ours. Airfields in Newfoundland were transferred to the Canadians or the local government. AFAIK we're out of all of them. Since they were 99-year leases, any residual claim will eventually revert to the locals.

When I was Kid my favorite toys were clockwork ones, the type you could wind up and let them run. Sorry but I have not grown up yet and still cannot resist turning the key occasionally. Brian

Ah yes, the old 'I was only winding you up' evasion.
It was a double bluff, Guv!
    Ha ha!
    Etc.
Oscar Wilde & Disraeli are doubtless spinning in anxious jealousy at such cunning repartee.

I believe the last time I was wound up properly by the Internet was sometime in c.2008.

Meanwhile, a recent picture of an American.
I know it to be true, as it was sent to me by an American.

Loved the old Merrie Melodies cartoons. They were more for adults back in the day...Watching some of them today, they have been censored beyond recognition. All the slapstick and topical political issues of those days were removed in order to be pc today.
Even 'toons from 50's-70's were overly censured.
    Warner Brothers cartoons were gold.

Warner Brother cartoons were always better than Disney. As Poppy said, they were made for adults to warm up audiences in theaters before the main feature. Yosemite Sam was hilarious but I don't remember him in any WWII cartoons. Bugs, Daffy and Porky were in a lot of them though. Mel Blanc did all of the voices of the male characters and some of the female ones too.
