I was watching the sort of "sequel" to James Garners Western/Comedy classic: Support Your Local Sheriff, which is: Support Your Local Gunfighter. This "sequel" had a Town Drunk Character most excellently played by: Jack Elam-whose name was: Jug. Well, the James Garner (Latigo Smith) character, sorta teams up with Jug, and they swindle $5,000 dollars out of the Henry Morgan character "Taylor Barton-Gold Mine Owner) who is having trouble with a rival Gold Mine owner-who allegedly hired several Gun-hands to sit on top of Bartons Mine thusly keeping him from trying to reach the Mother Lode, that they all know is located somewhere underneath the town-called: Purgatory. Well, Latigo Smith convinces the Harry Morgan character that Jug is really a reknown Gunfighter called: Swifty Morgan-who is played excellently by Chuck Connors-of The Rifleman fame. However, the rival Gold Mine owner knows that Jug aint really Swifty Morgan because Swifty Morgan is as bald as an egg and Jug aint. Well, the rival Mine owner sent the real Swifty Morgan a telegram saying that someone was muddling his name and reputation and to come to Purgatory to take care of the Poseur. To fast forward a bit, Swifty Morgan arrives and gets off the train he came in on. He also goes up to "Madame Oars" House and yells for the poseur to come out and face him in a Gunfight. well, as Latigo Smith is not exactly a coward not not exactly a brave man-just a bit smarter than the average Cowboy. So he uses his brains, steals one of Taylor Bartons Donkeys and ties a few crates full of TnT to it and rides to confront Swifty Morgan who says: Swifty Morgan: "What the hell you think your doing?" Latigo Smith: "If I were you, i'd aim high. Like it or not? you'd blow this town up, you along with it." S.M: "You tryin' to make a fool outta me?" L.S: "No, i'm trying to kill you mister Morgan." S.M: "You can't gunfight a man, sitting on your Ass!" (What's rally funny about the intended pun, is that he says it with a serious straight face." L.S: "As a matter of fact, it doesn't belong to me....It belongs to Taylor Barton...I stole it." S.M: "Like you stole my name." L.S: "Sorry bout that." S.M: "Not as sorry as your gonna be..... Swifty Morgan hits only what Swifty Morgan shoots at." L.S: "Sorry bout that too." S.M: "Anytime you feel lucky mister." Bystander: "FIRE IN THE HOLE!!" This bystander's job is to warn the town citizenry of when some blasting is about to happen. Just as Swifty Morgan is about to draw his Colt .45 Six-shooter, an explosion happens-just as hes going to draw his pistol and he winds up shooting a hole in his right foot and Latigo Smith rides a scared bucking Ass into Madame Oars House (Madame Oars House is a "Cat-House" also known as a Whore House-for those who don't know Western slang terminology) Oar House rhymes with-well you guessed it ;-)) Anyway, as Latigo Smith rides his busking Ass into the Oar House, they dissappear and there is a huge explosion inside. A few seconds later, Latigo Smith is seen being helped outside by the two older Madames in there. Swifty Morgan shouts in pain: "I Shot MYself, ......Don't Let Me Die With My Boots On Mister!!!" All the while, the two madams shout: "He Did It...He Did It! "He Hit The Mother Lode...Were Rich!". L.S: "No Maam, the claim belongs to Taylor Barton...it's his mule that done it." Taylor Barton (played by Harry (Henry) Morgan of Col. Sherman T. Potter of M*A*S*H fame): "You Hear that Abigale? It's My Ass!" The rival Mine owner is also Abagails Brother-who solmnly says: "It's mine too." Town Doctor: "I Always Knew That The Oars House Was A Gold Mine." If you don't get a laugh reading this, then rent a copy of "Support Your Local Gunfighter" and you will see what I mean when you watch these scenes. :-D
Recently watched Support Your Local Sherriff with my husband, which we quite enjoyed. I've seen it several times over the years. I have always been and will always be a fan of the work of Mr. Garner!
Those are two of my favorite Garner movies, I have all six seasons of The Rockford Files on DVD, and never tire of them. The other favorite of mine by him is Murphy's Romance, and even the movie Maverick with Mel Gibson was worth the watching just because he was in the thing.
I don't know. I'm kind of more in favor of the Terence Hill Trinity series of movies for spoofs on westerns...
Cheers Michelle, Luke, Clint, TA, Michelle, I too just watched Support Your Local SHeriff, last week as a matter of fact. Im going to be buying both of these by December-probably from the TCM site as they have many DvDs cheaper than DDDvD.com. Hi Luke, you will olike these. "Sheriff" also has Walter Brennan, Bruce Dern, Gene Evans andDick Peabody in it as the family who likes to terrorize town itizens and such. Bruce Dear is brillient in his role-as well as the others but Dern was great as one fo the men Garner arrested. Jack Elam is also in this movie-though most of the characters or all of them? gave different characters names-even Henry Morgans Characters name I think is different?? "Gunfighter" is also a hoot, also had Gene Evans, Harry morgan and this time-Susanne Pleshette-as the pretty young female character. Clint, these are also some of my top favorite Garner movies. Others I have with him in them that are great-you probably at least have: The Great Escape? I don't know anyone who doesn't have a copy of that movie yet ;-)) But, you will also like him in 36 Hours-which I got when it was first released. Another great garner film that was just recently released was: Darby's Rangers-which is one I have long awaited for. Oh and the cheapest price for this one I have seen is sold on the TCM website for $17.99 while DDDvD.com sells it @ $23.88. This release is part of a huge selection of Warner releases that all came available this or last month? and all sell for the same price. Another classic goodie I always wanted on DvD was: Carbine Williams-which is a James Stewart movie. TA, I like Terrence Hill too and thought he was great but, after doing just a few movies, he dissappeared-and I can't see why? because he was a rapidly rising star and by now could easily have about 50 or so great movies under his "belt". But he sure was great opposite Henry Fonda.
Clint, I forgot to add that-as I usualy hate movies of the type that Murphys Romance is-I really liked that one. James Garner made all the difference by being in it. The ONLY scene I hated was when they were in the Theater watching one of the Friday the 13th movies. What I liked about that scene and just after, is that you can see the genuine disliking of movies like that on Garners face as he gets up and walks out of the movie. I've done that a few times myself. Murphy's Romance is one on my "to get" list. I grew up watching The Rockford Files and eventually plan to get all those too as well as the made for TV movies-but not till I get all the seasons for Magnum P.I. I feel as you dowith Maverick-I liked the movie mainly because of Garner being in it. I also plan to get that series on DvD too-both original and short-lived newer version.
