    For sale: Nazi German tanks

Former Nazi ally Bulgaria plans to auction German tanks from the Second World War.

Bulgaria is selling German tanks from World War II for about €100,000. This is the starting price, according to the Sunday edition of Bulgarian daily Trud in Sofia. The Bulgarian Defence Ministry plans to auction some 22 German Wehrmacht tanks and assault guns. The best-preserved pieces will be offered to museums before auctions begin.

Bulgaria was allied with Germany during the Second World War, and the German military sent the tanks to the country during that time. The Bulgarian army later used the same weapons to fight Nazi Germany until its surrender in May 1945. At the end of the 1950s, the tanks that weren’t scrapped were cemented into a barrier to protect the formerly communist Eastern Bloc country on the Turkish border.

Now that both Bulgaria and Turkey are NATO members, the tanks are no longer necessary to protect the border.

In December 2007, Bulgarian authorities arrested two German nationals and a Bulgarian army officer who allegedly stole a German Wehrmacht tank and attempted to steal a second one near the southeastern town of Jambul in Bulgaria.

Hehe, in that condition? I´d hate to defend my country with tanks that have been buried in ground for 40-50 years. :D

But interesting news, thanks for posting!

Didn't Spielburg buy some for Private Ryan and later used them again in BoB?

Thanks LOL. It looks like one of the Stugs in the pic. I wonder how they were cemented in and how easy it is to get them out.

The two Tiger I were reproductions built on a T-34 chassis and the Marder III and Swedish Sav m/43 were found in Czechoslovakia.

I think they are probably selling them to museums etc rather than for people to defend their countries. To be honest the average WW2 tank would get torn to shreds on a modern battlefield!

JCF is correct. If you look closely at the road wheels of the tanks and the treads they are obviously T-34s cross dressing as Tigers.

Yes they are. They are similar to the ones used in "Kelly's Heroes".

What with these, and the ones sold recently in Finland, looks like the World is going to be awash with Stugs......I'm just sitting here, mentally figuring out how much space there is in my back-yard.....;) :D

Still no news of the theoretical dug-in Panthers in Bulgaria I'm afraid. But as these Mark IV's and Stugs were technically part of Bulgarian military planning until 2013 I keep my fingers crossed that a few remain secret. She was never officially supplied with them in wartime (but did use the vehicles of 5 different nations in a very short period!) they're said to have been Soviet supplied postwar.
Though I recall there are photos of complete Panthers in apparently Bulgarian service, I find myself wondering if the odd Pantherturm installation is still out there, facing Turkey... Now that would be an interesting find.

    Cheers,
    Adam.

Now, everybody knows that the Stug is the utlitmate anti-tank weapon. There are no computerized gizmos to fail because of Microsoft bugs and obsolete updates. The Stug is and shall always be the fear of all tanks. The Stug has risen and ready for action. I have spoken, now let it be done.

"If I were a rich man, Ya ha deedle deedle, bubba bubba deedle deedle dum. I'd buy me a Stug and All day long I'd biddy biddy bum." <==== Just for you Za
