Mars from 5 meters up: Five Meters over Mars Image Credit: NASA, JPL-Caltech, Ingenuity Explanation: On mission sol 872 (Earth date August 3) Ingenuity snapped this sharp image on its 54th flight above the surface of the Red Planet. During the flight the Mars Helicopter hovered about 5 meters, or just over 16 feet, above the Jezero crater floor. Tips of Ingenuity's landing legs peek over the left and right edges in the camera's field of view. Tracks visible near the upper right corner lead to the Perseverance Mars Rover, seen looking on from a distance at the top right edge of the frame. Planned as a brief "pop-up" flight, Ingenuity's 54th flight lasted less than 25 seconds. It followed Ingenuity's 53rd flight made on July 22 that resulted in an unscheduled landing. "Scientists are closing in on identifying a new force of nature after observing the peculiar 'wobble' of a subatomic particle. The experts whizzed tiny muons, which are similar to electrons, through a 50-foot-diameter ring at the US Energy Department's Fermilab in Batavia, Illinois. Measurements of the muon's magnetic 'wobble' can't be explained by the Standard Model of particle physics – potentially hinting at some unknown fifth force. Because muons form naturally when cosmic rays strike Earth's atmosphere, these results could change how we believe the universe works. The findings support earlier findings from 2021 but include more than quadruple the amount of data analysed, strengthening the claim for 'new physics'." www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-12396355/A-new-force-nature-Scientists-close-fifth-force-discover-mysterious-subatomic-particle-disobeying-laws-physics.html
And today's fascinating offering. "Neptune the eighth and final planet from the sun, is known for its trails of wispy white clouds made up of crystals of frozen methane. Strong winds whip these clouds across the ice giant at speeds of more than 1,200 mph – the fastest recorded anywhere in the solar system. But a new study shows they have now all but vanished, in a development that briefly baffled scientists. Experts have since discovered that the clouds disappear and reappear according to where the Sun is in its 11 year cycle - when its magnetic field flips. They discovered this after studying images from the Hubble Space Telescope dating back to 1994." www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-12420029/Why-Neptunes-clouds-VANISHED-Ice-giants-overcast-conditions-linked-suns-11-year-cycle-scientists-discover.html
If you like space based scifi I recommend John Varley's Thunder and Lightning quartet of books. And his Titan/Wizard/Demon trilogy.
Star Formation in the Pacman Nebula Image Credit & Copyright: Craig Stocks Explanation: Look through the cosmic cloud cataloged as NGC 281 and you might miss the stars of open cluster IC 1590. Formed within the nebula, that cluster's young, massive stars ultimately power the pervasive nebular glow. The eye-catching shapes looming in the featured portrait of NGC 281 are sculpted dusty columns and dense Bok globules seen in silhouette, eroded by intense, energetic winds and radiation from the hot cluster stars. If they survive long enough, the dusty structures could also be sites of future star formation. Playfully called the Pacman Nebula because of its overall shape, NGC 281 is about 10,000 light-years away in the constellation Cassiopeia. This sharp composite image was made through narrow-band filters. It combines emission from the nebula's hydrogen and oxygen atoms to synthesize red, green, and blue colors. The scene spans well over 80 light-years at the estimated distance of NGC 281.
Apollo Eight, IIRC, saw an area that was "quite lit up", https://moon.nasa.gov/resources/169/taurus-littrow-valley/.
Explanation: On September 12, from a location just south of the Arctic Circle, stones of Iceland's modern Arctic Henge point skyward in this startling scene. Entertaining an intrepid group of aurora hunters during a geomagnetic storm, alluring northern lights dance across the darkened sky when a stunning fireball meteor explodes. Awestruck, the camera-equipped skygazers captured video and still images of the boreal bolide, at its peak about as bright as a full moon. Though quickly fading from view, the fireball left a lingering visible trail or persistent train. The wraith-like trail was seen for minutes wafting in the upper atmosphere at altitudes of 60 to 90 kilometers along with the auroral glow. Tomorrow's picture: Magnified Moon Mountains

Got an app that alerts me when an aurora is due, but way too much bloody light pollution round here. Went up the local hill the other night when the alert was Amber, and because of light reflecting back down from the clouds it was like a full moon. Going to need to camp out on the local hill range, methinks.

We're suppose to have a good show tonight ! I'm going to do my best to stay up until at least midnight
I wish! At my age probably best not. Only 'stripper' I've seen in years is the type that peels paint.
I had fun with the ... entertainers when I was in Miami. Ah, to be that young, stupid, and horny again.
