    "Greetings people

Just a reminder for next week's SMATS meeting - Geoff is the secretary of the Stockport Militaria group, and a regular at SMATS.
This will be one of our more esoteric talks.

    History Through Military Brooches
    10th January 2012 at 7.30pm

    Speaker: Geoff Smith

Military brooches were bought by servicemen of this country to leave as keepsakes with their wifes, girfriends or mistresses before they went off to war as soldiers, sailors or airmen. They were manufactured in great numbers and in numerous ways and depicting the regiment or ship in which the men served. The brooches were popular during the Boer War, the First World War and to a lesser extent the Second World War.The talk will explain the history, the manufacture and some interesting stories attached to the brooches, many of which were given by men who never returned from the wars to their loved ones.

    Venue
Scout Building, Knivton Street, Godley, Hyde, SK14 2PU.
this is an ex-scout hut in Hyde, owned by a wargaming group, who are very pleased to provide a venue for us.

    "Dear Colleagues,
There are still a few spots avaialbe in the University of Denver 2012 summer field school in historical archaeology and museum studies at Amache, a WWII era Japanese American internment camp site in Granada, Colorado. Students interested in community-engaged research, in the archaeology of historic landscapes, in Asian American archaeology, or the relationship between archaeology and museums, are particularly encouraged to apply!
The field school will run from June 18 through July 17, 2012 and is offered for four credit hours to both undergraduate and graduate students. This field school provides the unique opportunity for students to work directly with individuals who once lived at the site where they will be conducting archaeological research. More details about the field school and the application are available at: https://portfolio.du.edu/amache. A flyer to share with students or post on a bulletin board is attached to this message.
Thank you for helping to spread the word,
    Bonnie Clark
Associate Professor of Anthropology, University of Denver"

"A WELL-known writer and broadcaster is giving a series of talks on the American airforce in Norfolk in World War Two.
Ian McLachlan will use artefects and slides to illustrate the series which, called The Friendly Invasion, covers the combat history and the impact on the local culture of thousands of young American airmen based in the county.
Mr McLachlan will pay tribute to the many airmen who lost their lives after taking off from Norfolk airfields.
He also explains archaeological digs to unearth the remains of shot-down aircraft."

    Spring Day School
US Civil War to First World War: Learning the Lessons
    Saturday 3 March 2012
It is axiomatic in American historiography that the US civil war was the first modern war and that Europe failed to learn the lessons of industrialised conflict and firepower. There are clear parallels in experience between the civil war and the First World War regarding mobilisation, motivation, firepower and defence in depth, which show that the wars were similar in their military challenges. This Day School will compare warfare in the two cases and consider whether European general staffs should have been forewarned by the American example."

    "Greetings people

Here's the reminder for next week's SMATS meeting - and news of other stuff NOT TO BE MISSED!

Incidentally - do keep checking the Twitter feed on th SMATS website - some extraordinary links have been appearing there.

I am confident that Next Tuesday's talk will be one of our best ever ... I managed to get a preview session with Frank, and the story he tells is fascinating. The experience of Frank's own father is part of the story, having been captured by the Russians in the opening days of WWII ... but I shoudn't steal Frank's thunder!

Anders Army - The Polish 2nd Corps
    14th February 2012 at 7.30pm

    Speaker: Frank Pleszak

The tragic story of the short lived 2nd Polish Army Corps, born in Russia's frozen steppes from the emaciated remnants of a Polish nation exiled to Stalin's brutal hard labour camps of Siberia, who against all odds developed into and elite fighting force in a hopeless struggle to liberate a homeland that would never be free.
The guide to events has just been made public - see here:
    What's On - Manchester Histories Festival 2012

There are seeral very interesting events to book into your diaries. The Festival day in the Town Hall on Sat 3rd Mar. will be especially good.

... and if you look for 28/2/12 events - you will see our SMATS Special event ... namely:

    The Military History of Manchester
    28th February 2012 at 7.30pm

    Speaker: Tim Cockitt

A broad, and humorous, outline of Manchester’s military history … to include Romans, Vikings, possibly Dr. John Dee (occultist and spy), Righteous Roundheads, Rebellious Jacobites, a WW1 PoW, an airship, a V1, assorted Nazis … and the secret nuclear bunker … and most of it true!
The South Manchester Tactical Society are presenting this extra lecture in its annual programme to coincide with the Manchester Histories Festival.

    And the usual logistics stuff

Cambrai 1917 - The Battle of Lateau Wood
    13th March 2012 at 7.30pm
    Speaker: Ian Sanders
"At 7 am on November 30th a tremendous bombardment was suddenly opened along the whole British front line. It developed rapidly in intensity and within a short time all communications with the front line were severed...."
The Battle of Cambrai is known famously for the first use of massed tanks, however less known is the fate of those units caught up in the German counter-attack of 30th November 1917. For one unit, the 6th Battalion Royal West Kents, the day ended with its strength being only one officer and 17 other ranks. This is their story."
