During WWII, my grandfather (now deceased) served as a radioman in the 423rd Armored Field Artillery Battalion. Awhile back, I came across this old cigar box of his which, as you can tell, is filled to the brim with beautiful photographs: I suspect that the larger ones (on the left-hand side) are reprints, judging by the professional-grade quality and typewritten captions. However, the backsides of those prints list no copyright information whatsoever and, in fact, are entirely blank. So, I guess it's possible that they're not reprints after all. Here are some of the more interesting ones that I scanned in from that particular pile: There's plenty more like that in the cigar box, along with various other scenic shots. But the ones that piqued my curiosity the most were 'acquired' one way or another by my grandfather and contain scores of German handwriting on their backsides. Additionally, there's a bag of about 30 film slides (also 'acquired') with images such as these: ...and perhaps the most shocking of the group: Keep in mind, this is just a small sample from the bag of slides and cigar box. There's plenty of others which are just as interesting that I'm also hoping to digitize as soon as possible. In the meantime, I'm wondering if anyone here could provide some insight or information about the subjects above, or be willing to translate the aforementioned German handwriting into English? Thanks, and have a wonderful day.
Some interesting pictures there, the aircraft on fire is a Hurricane but as for the German pics i don't know much about them. Thanks for shareing. Mike.
These are some great pictures! That last one in particular. I'm sure there will be others along who will be able to ID a few of them. Thanks for sharing! Oh and welcome to the forum.
Great pictures. I can tell you that the third last one is a photo of U-Boat pens under construction (likely in France, as most of the pens were located there). I haven't seen any of these before (or even any similar ones). Thanks for posting.
Welcome to the forum. Those are some interesting photos. A real treasure trove. Incidentally, the last one is of Hitler turning over dirt for the Autobahn in 1938. See here West Autobahn - Ask Jeeves Encyclopedia As far as translation, why not post a few, front and back, and I'm pretty sure some of the Rogues can give you a hand.
