"Air Attacks Against Italy" shows exciting from the cockpit views of USAAF Apache A-36 dive bomber bombing & strafing attacks near Rome in 1944.
The A-36 Apache (aka "The Invader") was the Allison engined ground attack version of the P-51 Mustang, equipped with dive brakes and 20mm cannon.

Thanks for making me look deeper.

The Allison engine made it look like a P40...originally had the 'scoop' several inches behind the propeller hub and was moved forward to the edge of propeller hub due to issues incurred while in a steep dive.
Had never seen the nose mounted MG's in any of my books. Thought they were like ME 109, mounted above the engine. But they are located on bottom of engine, close to propeller.

Thanks Fred, amazing what can be found on youtube. this one was new to me.

Poppy, thanks for the links. The 109's DB 600 , Daimler-Benz now sellings some of us Mercedes carts, was mounted with the "V" down whereas most WW2 fighters had the V up. No doubt the reson for gun placement. It aklso was fuel injected.

If I remember correctly The Allison did well up to about 15,000 feet but it lack of a two stage supercharger, unlike the Rolls royce, could not produce as much high altitude power. Not needed in a dive bomber role.
