At the time I considered him an "average" president. Compared to what we have now-he's wonderful! However, there's one area that he was masterful at: Being commander-in-chief in time of war. He didn't try to micro-manage his generals but gave them their mission which he kept doable. He kept his efforts on the highest strategic plane. Somehow he cobbled together an extremely diverse coalition and held it together. And lastly, he brought the nation together in support of the war. Future presidents would do well to emulate him if war comes again!
