Gorgeous find Kai. Is this winter 1941-42 , it looks like it was a real cold one , even in Holland. Btv Den Helder is still a Dutch navy base nowadays.

Great photos, Kai. I'm not real familiar with this convoy, but the pictures bring it alive. Nice contribution.

Yes, i think it is early 1942. I think I saw a date somewhere in the photo album. One of those albums I knew I had to have once I saw it the first time. Fortunately the price was not too high... ;)

This confirms my guess 1944-45 would have been impossible (end of war) and other winters were milder in Holland, so the 1941-42 suits in perfectly.

Ejsberg in Danemark should provide some nice now and thens too

interesting and great album Kai you have a protective Raümboot Flottille on the scene in several of your fine fotos.............also some larger protection vessels. The lozenge type markings on the hulls and sides of the R-Boots may give you the flottille actually duie to this type of camo. am hoping this makes sense ? the chemo I'm on is giving me horrific probs sorry to say.

I'd guess it has to be either January 1942 or February 42 based on the presence of the large escort vessel.

The large escort seen in a couple of pics is either the Tirpitz, Scharnhorst, or Prinz Eugen with her clipper bow. There weren't that many large capital ships still available to Germany, and their movements are pretty well tracked.

In January 42 the Tirpitz sailed to Trondheim and in Feb 42 the Prinz Eugen joined her there after the channel dash. The Tirpitz stayed in the Trondheim area and the Prinz was damaged shortly after arrival and returned to Germany for repairs. Neither made any more trips to/from Norway. Scharnhorst had been in the Norway area in 1940 and didn't return until March 1943, so she's likely not the right vessel.

(I'm leaning toward the pic being of the Tirpitz, myself.)

R-Flottille is the 5th based in the Finnenbusen during 1941 before it was later used in Norwegen waters from late 41 till wars end, the above pic of the "heavy" ship is cationed as a Destroyer but may easily be mis-ID'd.

the pic of the larger escort vessel is the "Elbe"

Great new details Gents, so the trip would be Ijmuiden, Den helder, (Holland) via Esjberg, (Denmark ) until Norway .

However upon a closer look , there seems to be another mission south to escort U-Boote through the Straight of Calais (they headed south to Rotterdam and then the next thing you see is the "Kanal" )

    Kai,
On your post of 6/23 8:09 the caption for the bottom RH picture (capital ship escort in distance) is cut off. Can you repost or read what it says? It may provide the hint for dating.

I don´t have the album with me but it says that it´s Tirpitz in the picture. If you wondered about that.
