    The mechanical pencil ruins it for me.

    That's a draftsman's pencil. You don't have to cut the wood away, not easily broken. I used them through four years of high school. Very handy.

    Your pardon then. I didn't know mechanical pencils existed back then. I thought it was all ruling pens, those devilishly tricky things.
