As you can see my name is Vanessa and i live in York, North Yorkshire.
I am trying to research my grandfather who i never knew.
He was with the Green Howard's in Richmond North Yorkshire and died in 1940.
I am therefore going to be a pest and ask questions to those history buffs about the last conflict he was in but not at the moment.
I am looking around this great site and am fascinated at what i have seen so far.
Well done to all who help keep it going.

Sorry about my miss spelling on the heading.

What was his name? I found records of the Richmond cemetary listing a Sergeant who died 1 June 1940. This would put the death at the time of the battle of Dunkirk. The Green Howard's took part in the defense of Arras.

    Vanessa,
Next of Kin are able to apply for a British Serviceman's Records from the MoD.
It's a long wait but make sure you ask for photos copies of the originals not a typed summary.
    See here.
    Service records

Have you approached the Green Howards Museum in Richmond for any info?

    Good morning all.
Just finished work so popped on for a quick check before i hit the hay!!LOL!!!

My grandfathers name was THOMAS KELLERT.
My Avatar photo is of him. The only proper one i have of him.
He died the 4th December 1940 in hospital.
I have been to the Green Howards Museum and had a chat to the Major who looks after it all.
He let me look, but not borrow a book about the conflict he was last in.
His troops where sent over to Norway to keep the Germany's busy so that the Royal Family could escape.
He was captured. But after 2 days he managed to escape and it took him nearly 1 week to get to safety.
He suffered server frost bite and was shipped back here and put into hospital where he later died.
I found him on the CWG and that is how i was able to find his grave.
He is buried in Richmond North Yorkshire.
The strange thing is i have never been to Richmond before in my life but as soon as i walked into the graveyard i found him!
    My husband was gob smacked!!LOL!!
    Gosh i have waffled on a bit!!LOL!!

Anyway of to bed and will pop back on later this afternoon.

Welcome Vanessa, glad you joined us. :D

I'm a little unsure about which light you are referring to, can you be a bit more specific?

That's your reputation rating. Nobody had given you any good rep yet so I went in and extended you a kind hand :D

You can give reputation, good or bad, to other members by clicking in the Scales of Justice icon right beside the Danger Ahead roadside.

Best of luck in your quests!

In 1940, as part of 15 Brigade, the 1st Battalion, The Green Howards were sent to Norway to help stem the German advance. It was too little, too late but 15 Brigade distinguished themselves by delaying the German advance along the Gudbrandsdalen. At the Battle of Otta on 28 April, they were attacked from the air, then by tanks and then infantry in typical Blitzkrieg fashion. Lacking effective heavy support, they waited until the enemy came within 400 metres then opened fire with controlled and accurate rifle fire. Despite greater numbers and equipment, the Green Howards held their position until nightfall when they retired. The Germans were unable to press an attack due to casualties and poor morale, which was acknowledged in their dispatches. They acted as rearguard until they were evacuated from Åndalsnes.

Thank you so much for that information PzJgr.
I was trying to remember what the book said that the Major let me look at but brains getting stale!!LOL!!
I will copy that info down.
I do know that granddad was mentioned in dispatches twice.
Once for driving a fuel tank across the dessert somewhere under intense enemy fire.(which dessert i can not remember at the moment).
The other i do not know.
I will have to wait and see when i get the spare money together to send for his army records.
I always seem to be hard up these days!!LOL!!

Prior to your Grandfather's death, his unit participated primarily in two areas. In Norway and in France. I will see where his unit was in 39'.

    Vanessa,
1/Green Howards were in 5th Division.
I have the Divisonal History upstairs, I'll look up their part over the weekend, too late now.
