Hi! I'm the granddaughter of two WWII vets, the daughter of a Vietnam vet, then aunt of a current NROTC young man. I just wanted to stop here first to say 'hi' -- I'll be looking through the forum to see if I can find more information on the service of my two grandfathers. One of them who serviced in Trinidad for 18 months before being honorably medically discharged with his health listed as "poor". This is a mystery for my family as no one has any memory of him having war wounds or other medical conditions. So I'm just interested in finding out more about life in Trinidad for the US Army soldiers there. The other was part of airborne troop carrier missions, in D-Day and Market Garden. I'm interested in learning more about what his duties and daily life might have been like during the war, as well. So... hi! *waves*
Hi Jam, and welcome. If you can give us as much information as you can, we'll try to help. Names, units, and anything you possess (discharge papers, etc), will help.
Welcome aboard. As for your grandfather's health. Malaria was endemic to Trinidad in that time frame I believe. It can hit some people pretty hard. So that's a possibility. My understanding is once you have malaria you never completely get rid of the vector but may or may not experience out breaks of the symptoms over the rest of your life. Other diseases or a combination are a distinct possibility.
