Me and Panzerprofile have been having somewhat of an email discussion about Halloween. What are the origins of Halloween? Is it an American invention?
I think the decorations and costumes were because of a fear of demons that come to this world on Oct 31. Something like that anyways. Kids got stuff like always but there was another reason then just plain fun. A friend and I are planning to go to school as Red and Harold Green from the Red Green Show...she's also coming as a bad drag queen, a drag king... on consecutive day no less. With another friend I'll be Blue62 (for explanation PM me) and he's gonna be Red62 (it's kinda complicated)
Red Green is probably one of the easiest custumes. Well maybe just for me all I need is a grey beard and some green red suspenders.
From what I remember: Halloween (hallowed evening) is basically the Celt's version of Memorial Day. They had a big get together remembering former friends and family. Folks would get dressed up and decorate stuff. Children would go around collecting the food donations for the feast. It continued because the Church felt that it would be easier to convert the pagans if some of their traditions were allowed to continue. The current spookyness has about as much to do with Halloween as Santa and shopping has to do with Christmas. Basically, not much.
The term Halloween, and its older spelling Hallowe'en, is shortened from All-hallow-even, as it is the evening before "All Hallows Day".....All saints day in the Catholic Church. Magic is said to be more potent on this day and it is easier to get in touch with 'the other side'.......ooooooOOOOooooooh!
As Roxy points out, the modern name of 'Halloween' comes from the Christian name of 'All-Hallow's eve' or the day before All-Saint's day. The original pagan festival is, I think, the festival from the time of year when the Spirit World is most easily accessable from this world. It was a big festival up in Scotland for a long time, and then for some reason it caught on in America.
Seems fitting that the Unholy Alliance Tour play at the Cardiff International Areana on the 30th-31st October
I figured Halloween might have it's roots elsewhere.Mexico celebrates 'The Day of the Dead'.Does anybody have more info on this event?
The usual reasons for banning halloween are that it happens to be on a Sunday or enough people in the community think its demonic, or someother nonsense.
That sounds like absolute rubbish. It is was me, I'd celebrate it just to see what people would do about it...
it is celebrated nov 1 and 2, the first day it dedicate to the dead childrens and the second for the gown ups, this tradition comes from the ancients aztec, who offered bred and food to the dead ones.
I'd wouldn't protest if halloween was banned... What little 'celebration' goes on here usually consists of kids chucking eggs at peoples houses... damn kids
They could chuck eggs any day they wanted. Why ban Halloween and screw everybody.Banning Halloween won't stop them.
Smeg: SACRILEGE I say. That's my birthday! Of course at my age, it might be prudent to stop counting. Tim
