On this day in 1929 Civil Rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. was born. We celebrate January 15 as a national holiday in the US to honor him and his legacy (actually the third Mon. of the month of Jan). Regardless of our political views, there is one pure right with no grey area, that "all men and women are created equal."

MLK Day is observed in the USA as a public holiday on the third Monday of January (not the second). Elsewhere it is observed as a day for civil rights and peace action on 15 January..

How awful it might have been, and how high the price we'd have paid (and would still be paying) had the militants come to the fore instead of King and his strategy of peace.

I think you're absolutely right kodiak, if it was anyone but King, the United States would be a considerably more dangerous and violent place.
