Hi People! I'm Annie and I live in Idaho. I've been a history buff my whole life thanks to my parents watching documentaries throughout my childhood. I remember when I was about 8 years old my father explaining the Ho Chi Min trail to me, lol. The grand scale of World War II has always been my first love as far as history goes. My uncle was awarded the Silver Star for his actions with the 14th Armored Division (The Liberators!) and I've been proud of that fact. When we were little he would show us the shrapnel in his skull although he would never talk about his service. I have lots of areas that I need to learn more about. My knowledge of the Pacific Theater is pretty weak and I hope I can learn more while here among y'all. Thanks for having me! Annie
Welcome! The forum is a good place to get going on some hard core study of WWII. You may find HyperWar: World War II on the World Wide Web and New Page 1 informative.
Annie, I got hook on WWII by watching "Victory At Sea", in 1957. B&W TV, but the videos were black and white so it wasn't a loss.
Hi Annie. Seems like your upbringing was a good one. There's a whole section on the Pacific Theater. You can't go wrong reading there. War in the Pacific. I recommend you do a LOT of reading to enhance your knowledge.
That and "The World At War" make for good starting points. They ran Victory At Sea first in 1956. We didn't have a TV then. Reruns the next year got me going. Never waivered from my goal. Joined the USN the day after I graduated from high school.
Thanks for all the kind welcomes and also the advice on where to learn! I've seen some episodes of Victory at Sea but have yet to sit down and watch it all....the same with the World at War. Looks like I better get busy! Annie
