I am working on my grandfather's history in WWII and thought I would come here and see if anyone that he knew is here. My grandfather is in the pic in my avatar. His name is Harold Harris. He is from the 531st Engineer Shore Regiment that turned into the 3053rd Engineer Combat Batallion. My grandfather is my world and am hoping to give him his medals and awards at the Veteran's Day services this year. I am so excited to do this for him...
Let me be the first to welcome you to our home... we pride ourselves in a quality forum which is overflowing with knowledge and friendly people... worldwide. Post your grandfather's info here Information Requests - World War II Forums Hopefully you will have a good return! Best of luck in life, and all the best to you and yours Jem
Thank you very much Jem! I have called so many places for info. Even a really nice man that is a Engineer historian. I will do that. Blesses to you and yours also.
No problem and if you find what you are seeking... don't be a stanger around here. We see so many join the forums, but fail to stick around or hear from them again??? take care sandy, Jem
Welcome to the forum. Have you started the process of getting his medals? If you haven't, check this thread for steps to take. http://www.ww2f.com/military-servic...esting-copies-military-personnel-records.html Here is the website that starts the process. Military Personnel Records Goof luck, and tell us more about your grandfather. Where did he serve? Does he have any stories he can share? Let us know how you are making out.
I have a Veterans Service Officer helping me with that end.. We did the request for records BUT>>> and it's a huge BUT.. St Louis says that there was a fire in the 70's and my grandfathers records were burned.. So I have contacted the Engineers Assoc. and the Center for Military History. I am bound ad determined to get all this and get it correct. I also talked to an older gentleman by the name Thomas Dorris who was in the 531st. He is sending me what he has information. I hate deadlinse but we are doing the presentation on Nov.11th. and I am hoping to have a nice shadow box with most of his medals and memorabilia in it. I can't wait to surprise him. My sons are boyscouts and the boyscouts are involvedin the services each year, this year they will be bringing the shadow box to my pa. I tear up thinking about it. Pa had and still does have a hard time dealing with the memories of WWII but he hasstarted to open up to us about it. I think this might help him some, to see we are thankful and do honor him and what he did for the country. what do you guys think?
I think you are headed in the right direction Sandy! Well done, and stick to the task at hand. Your Pa will be blown away... the gift in honoring and dedication is a beautiful thing. I wish I could be there to see it Your efforts and heart are in the right place for a salute in my book. cheers, Jem
Thank you and I saulte you too , (but on here I don't know how). My pa is being evaluated for PTSD and I was there when he talked and watched him cry and held his hand and cried with him. My heart goes out to all Veterans.. I will see this misson threw and succeed. My Pa calls me the one women army and I will never let him down.. I have some numbers of places to call if you know anyone doing the same as me. And will share any info i get on the 531st with those that ask.
Much obliged for the salute in return! Thank you. As you will find out, the rogues that peruse these hallowed halls have an amazing amount of respect for veterans. Stay in contact... I would love to hear the feedback! all the best Sandy aka (one woman army ) Jem
Sandy, I can't send you a private message yet, so this will have to suffice. I am flattered that you are showering me with salute's left and right! You are allotted three salutes in a 24hour time period... so use them wisely Glad you are enjoying the forum Jem
I think it's a wonderful idea. My father passed away nearly 20 years ago, and it was only within the last few years that I've been able to piece together his service. I have all his medals and created my own shadow box (if you go to my profile, the picture is in there.) You are lucky he his available to talk to. I wish I could have the same opportunity. As for the fire, we've all dealt with it. NARA can usually piece together what you need from other sources. I hope the Veterans Service Officer can help expedite the process. Be sure to keep us up to date with your progress. There are many hereabout who are interested.
531st Engineer Shore Regiment 15 Jun 42 Activated Camp Edwards, Mass 5 Aug 42 Departed New York P/E 17 Aug 1942 Arrived England 22 Oct 1942 Departed 8 Nov 1942 Assaulted Arxew Algeria 13 Jun 1943 Zeralda Algeria 10 Jul 1943 Assualted Gela, Sicily 26 Aug 1943 returned to Damesne, Algeria 9 Sep 1943 Assaulted Salerno, Italy 17 Oct 1943 Moved to Atripalda, Italy 16 Nov 1943 Moved to Naples, Italy 18 Nov 1943 Departed Italy 12 Dec 1943 Arrived England 6 Jun 1944 Assaulted Normandy, France 2 Aug 1944 Disbanded Personnel transferred to Headquarters and Headquarters Company 1186th Engineer Combat Group and 3051, 3052nd and 3053rd Engineer Combat Battalions. Credited with Algeria-French Morocco, Sicily, Naples-Foggia and Normandy Campaigns. 3053rd Enginer Combat Battalion 2 Aug 1944 St Martin de Varreville, France Credited with Central Europe, Normandy, Northern France & Rhineland Campaigns. I don't have anymore information on the whereabouts to the 3053rd, but I do for the 1186th. However knowing where the Group was does not necessarily translate into knowing where the Battalions were. "Group" was more an administrative and/or command/supply unit and the battalions were parcelled out where needed and were not necessarily under command of Group, even though they were a subordinate unit. But it could give you a good idea of the general area of the battalion. 1186th Engineer Combat Group 21-29 Nov 1944 Crossed Holland [probably near Maastrict] 29 Dec 1944 Entered Belgium 18 Jan 1945 returned to France 21 Mar 1945 Entered Germany 16 Nov 1945 New York P/E 18 Nov 1945 Inactivated 2 Aug 1944 Activated at Ste Marie du Monte, Normandy France. I have strong suspicions that the 1186th (and the battalions) were under the control of US 9th army while in France and Belgium, probably under XIX Corps. You might consider looking at what the US 30th Infantry Division and US 2nd Armored Division did. Their histories might mentioned the 1186th and/or the battalions.
Slipdigit.. that was awesome!! you hit it.. pa went to Oran it say on his dd-214 Spetember 3.. He said the first real combat he seen was in Sicily.. which would have been Operation Husky..a nd then to Salerno and Italy then England (somewehre in there) he was on a ship called the Champollin and it was attcked by German subpack but they still made it to England where he had the mock invasion of Normandy Exercise Tiger.. we all know how that went.. then Utah Beach.. Where they were the 1st on the beach I believe an hour before the actuall landings took place to cut in the roads and cut all the wire so everyone else to get in. From what I wa told that is where they changed to the 3053rd because the army did not need more beach landings.. and HQ and some men went to open up Okinawa but pa was sent to the 3053rd to stay in the ETO.. his campaigns are.. naples-foggia rome-arno normandy northern france rhineland central europe thank you for your help.. you guys out here are great help...
lol.. I was not undertanding why I couldnot do it so I think I tried a few times.. I told ya I was determined..lol
LRusso216.. I feel the same way I am very lucky that he is here for us to talk to about this. My pa is my Knight and Shining Armor.. My rock and like a father to me. I wish he could see himself through my eyes.. I'm sorry for your loss and thank your Grandfather for his service and loyalty to our country!! I also thank you for keeping your grandfather's memory alive through the shadow box.. These men are our history they are why we are walking, talking and breathing the free air that we are.. freedom never cames free.. and not many remember that.. I feel if we pass these men's memories on it might make the younger genre's remember.. May all our men and women be remembered always!!!
