Ummm....I'm not 100 percent sure, but I think both of those videos show the Nagasaki mushroom cloud (The Fat Man implosion device bomb) dropped by the B-29 "Bocks Car". The Hiroshima bomb (the Little Boy Uranium gun) was dropped by the Enola Gay and had a different looking cloud. Someone correct me if I am wrong.
I am new to this format and no idea how to go about finding what I want to know. Perhaps someone will point me to the right place and procedure. My father-in-law was a Marine and in the first group into Nagasaki after the bomb. I am trying to find someone who knew of him. He died when my husband was a boy. Any suggestions where to start?
Well, you need to find out what unit you father-in-law served with. IRC, the first marines into Nagasaki were shipboard detachments from USS Wichita(CA-45) and USS Biloxi(CL-80), these were the relieved by elements of the 2nd Marine Division. As to requesting military records, a good place to start would be here: http://www.ww2f.com/military-servic...esting-copies-military-personnel-records.html or do a forum search. Your best place to start would be here: Veterans' Service Records
Good info, Takao. Dsdding, I would suggest that you introduce yourself in the New Members area, and post what you are looking for in the Information Requests section. You'll find all manner of help that way.
That's the mushroom cloud of the Nagasaki bomb. To my knowledge there are only three known photos of the Hiroshima mushroom cloud taken from the air in the minutes after the blast because the dedicated fixed cameras on other aircraft failed and another roll of film was destroyed during processing. The photo below was taken by "Enola Gay" tailgunner TSgt Bob Caron using a handheld camera given to him by the 509th's photographic officer. This is by far the best of the set and is the only official photo. Two other photos were taken by 2Lt Russell Gackenbach on "Neccessary Evil" using a personal camera (allegedly against regulations). Both are grainy and distant. "The Great Artiste" shot a 16mm film with a handheld camera.
Both fireballs rose and turned into clouds of smoke. A mushroom cloud is endemic of all nuclear weapons.
All large explosions. There's a picture of an ammo ship exploding, IIRC, off Italy with a very nice 'shroom above the hole in the water.
