    "Queen Elizabeth II, the UK's longest-serving monarch, has died at Balmoral aged 96, after reigning for 70 years.
    Her family gathered at her Scottish estate after concerns grew about her health earlier on Thursday.
    The Queen came to the throne in 1952 and witnessed enormous social change.
    With her death, her eldest son Charles, the former Prince of Wales, will lead the country in mourning as the new King and head of state for 14 Commonwealth realms.
    In a statement, Buckingham Palace said: "The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon.
    "The King and the Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow."

    Appropriate to commemerate Her Majesty here, given that she did serve in WW2, however briefly (not including the ubiquitous duties involved in being the Princess)

    She served as a mechanic/driver in the Auxiliary Territorial Service. There is a well known photo of her in uniform standing in front of an ambulance.

    A princess working with the military wasn’t a normal thing at the time. But when she turned 18 in 1944, young people all around the country were doing their part. In the meantime, Queen Elizabeth wanted to help.

    Eventually, she was successful in convincing her father to allow her serve. Queen Elizabeth is the first and only woman in the royal family to be an active service member.

    Unlike most Royals, who I really don't have time for, she was the exception. She had style, and grace and class, and seemed to be a decent human being. If we had royalty over here, I'd want my Queen to be like her. Huge respect for a life well led!
