The WWI/WWII era British Monitor I have been looking for some detailed info regarding this ship, i have googled as much i can stand to (is it just me or has google become increasingly useless over the last year or two?) and havent really found what i would call a good source of info. Can anyone direct me to a good source, book, website..etc.
Thats what I am hoping for LOL, A few years back I picked up an old naval photo book actually made by the US Navy in 1916, The "latest and newest" ship pictured in the book is the USS Arizona, its a nice hard back, got it for 5 dollars at a second hand bookstore, never know till ya try
I was so desperate to get a copy of my own that I contacted the author. He didn't have any either. At least, none to spare. I recently heard that a copy was selling at a sane price. Someplace in Britain. This is why we have Inter-Library Loans. Seriously, this is a great tool, and it has netted me many rare titles.
The wikipedia has many informations. This one doesn't have many informations but it may help for starting. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Erebus
The question of worth depends on need, I think the ships are an interesting concept, and would like to learn more about them, but not for $190
That's hardly an unusual price for books of this sort. Try finding a copy of British Destroyers by March; even a lousy copy is about $250. Or British Battleships or British Cruisers by R&R. Before they reprinted Campbell's Naval Weapons, it was routinely priced at $500.
Im aware that its not unusual, but as usual its above my means If i had the dispoasble income i wouldnt hesitate to buy it. Can never have enough books
What really bugs me is when a publisher prints up a few copies of a book with limited illustrations and mediocre production quality, then charges a hundred bucks for it. (Yes, this means you, Routledge!) French publishers are all terrible in this same way, but at least they provide much more elaborate production quality.
I Just googled around a bit: http://www.jeroenkoppes.com/ww2/ships/hms_erebus.asp http://uboat.net/allies/warships/types. ... pe=Monitor http://www.clydesite.co.uk/clydebuilt/v ... sp?id=6190 http://www.naval-history.net/WW2RN24-Br ... eships.htm http://www.navweaps.com/Weapons/WNBR_15-42_mk1.htm http://www.cyber-heritage.co.uk/psound/ http://www.battleships-cruisers.co.uk/monitors.htm It does seem that the net is being flooded by all sorts of encyclopedia with exactly the same information :-?
Picked up a copy of Big Gun Monitors by way of inter library loan, the closest library that would actually loan theirs out was almost 600 miles away, havent had a chance to read yet, just skimmed thru a little bit, looks quite interesting
Inter-library loans are a wonderful thing; I've used them myself several times to get books that my own local library doesn't carry on its shelves.
So far its a great read, lots of info on these unique ships, im going to hate having to return it, I would highly recommend it to anyone interested naval history.
I think there should be international library loans. There is no single copy of that book in any of Finnish libraries. Same goes with other interesting naval books
Given what it costs to ship something overseas, I don't think that's likely to happen anytime soon. Which is too bad, as that's not a bad idea.
