I would love to aquire a book that has a phenominal collection of photographs from the Eastern Front. Anyone have any suggestions?
The best I've ever seen was also, unfortunately , the hardest to find. Paul Carell published 2 classic books in the 60s ( ' Hitler's War On Russia ' & 'Scorched Earth ' ). These had very good photos but best of all, a companion book of photos ( called simply 'Bildband' ) was published by Ullstein in Germany. It's a terrific collection of photos - many in colour - many taken by PK-Kriegsberichter. There have been others since ( particularly by Janusz Piekalkiewicz ) which are very good ( eg ' Stalingrad' , 'Operation Citadel' ) but the Carell book is to me the best....
JP's books are noted for terrible copying of photos. As Martin has said the Scorched Earth-Bildband maybe the best available but even here many of the photos are not crisp. The end result maybe to save loads of monies and purchase the many individual German ground combat histories. As to Soviet sources I can not say what is current but surely there must be some..... µ E µ
I just remembered that over 15 years ago I wanted to read about the Russian perspective of WW2 but couldn't find anything on the subject. I wrote the Russian embassy in Holland about a booklist and maybe the addresses of Russian veterans to correspond with. They actually sent me a stack of paperback books (in English!) which described WW2 from a Russian perspective. They also sent me the address of their Veterans Administration in Moscow. I wrote them, but never heard anything unfortunately.
