KONGO Four Japanese KONGO Class battlecruisers built in 1912-15 were rebuilt between 1933 and 1940 as fast battleships to act as carrier escorts. Along with her sister ships the HIEI and KIRISHIMA she took part in the major actions off Guadalcanal. The KONGO survived the Battles of the Philippine Sea and Leyte Gulf until the end of 1944, when on 21 November she was torpedoed and sunk off the coast of Formosa by the US submarine SEALION.
