    KONGO
Four Japanese KONGO Class battlecruisers built
in 1912-15 were rebuilt between 1933 and 1940
as fast battleships to act as carrier escorts.
Along with her sister ships the HIEI and
KIRISHIMA she took part in the major actions off
Guadalcanal. The KONGO survived the Battles of
the Philippine Sea and Leyte Gulf until the end
of 1944, when on 21 November she was
torpedoed and sunk off the coast of Formosa by
    the US submarine SEALION.
