I'm a British writer, living in Normandy. My primary interest and reason for joining WWIIF is to help in my research for a book. On June 21 1944 Troop "A" of the 24th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron (Mechanized) rolled into St Pierre Eglise (where I live) and ended 4 years of German occupation. But Troop "A"'s story only gets more interesting after that. I am hoping to identify as many of those men as I can, with photographs and documents where possible, speak to living relatives and provide a suitable permanent written memorial to their remarkable work. I have found important primary source documentation about the Squadron from the time, some of it with help from the US Army, and identified just three of the men involved, in the first two weeks of research. But it's a good start. As a non-expert you may see me asking stupid rookie questions, so please bear in mind that I'm a novice in this world. I look forward to maybe getting to know some of you and filling in the gaps of this remarkable story. Mike
We were all noobs at something once or twice in our lives, we can deal with it. Interesting project. We have some good people here that may be able to help.
Offhand, I don't know if the 24th is a regular army, reserve, or national guard unit. That would be a good place to start. Federal troops are a bit harder sometimes to get info on, whereas contacting the state and national guard for that state on a national guard unit could be very productive.
Thanks - I've got plenty of source documents on the Squadron's makeup, purpose and deployment but I wasn't aware of this possibility. Appreciate all pointers like this.
P Perfect, because the story I am researching is as much about the guys themselves as it is about military matters.
