BEWARE!!!!!!!!!!!! BUYERS OF THESE FAKE ETCHED WW2 K98 COMBAT BAYONETS. FIRST AND FOREMOST, THESE BAYONETS ARE TOTALLY AND WITHOUT DOUBT! FAKES.ETCHING STARTED SOME 25 YRS AFTER WW2 ENDED.THE VALUE OF A K98 AT THAT TIME WOULD HAVE BEEN AROUND £5, SO SOMEONE CAME UP WITH IDEA TO ETCH? AND THOUGHT THIS WOULD HELP TO SELL THEM AT A MUCH HIGHER PRICE.REMEMBER! HOW MUCH YOU BID IS UP TO YOU,BUT THE TRUE VALUE OF THE K98 IS LOST.. SOMETIMES CALLED FANTASY BAYONETS,THEY WERE FIRST SEEN IN THE U.K. AROUND THE LATE SIXTIES/EARLY SEVENTIES,SOME WERE DONE TO ORDER AND CERTAIN ETCHINGS APPLIED,BATTLES/PANZER/SS/ELITE,ETC,ETC.THEY ARE NOT I REPEAT NOT!! ORIGINAL AS NO ARMY K98 WW2 ISSUE BAYONETS WERE ENGRAVED/ETCHED.CHECK "K98 DATA REGISTRY WEB",K98.FREE WEB SITE,"BCN NETWORK PAGE","OLD-SMITHY WEB SITE", DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY AS THE BAYONET OTHER THAN LOOKING PRETTY IS NOW DEVALUED, A FEW HAVE BEEN SOLD AT RIDICULOUS PRICES AND I SUSPECT TO BUYERS UNAWARE OF THE GENUINE/REALITY OF THE BAYONETS ETCHINGS,I HOPE I HAVE BEEN OF SOME HELP AND MADE YOU AWARE OF SOMETHING CLAIMED TO BE AN ORIGINAL K98 ETCHED BAYONET AND RARE? IT IS NEITHER. AS FOR THE BAYONET? MOST ARE NOT IN GOOD CONDITION AS CLAIMED, ALTHOUGH GENUINE IN ITSELF,ETCHING HELPS TO SELL AT EXTORTIONATE PRICES.... PLEASE DO NOT DEFACE K98 BAYONETS, NOR SELLERS SELL AS AN ORIGINAL? WATCH FOR SELLERS WHO DO NOT STATE HOW AND WHEN ETCHING DONE,AS SOME SELLERS ARE STATING ENGRAVED! IT IS NOT ENGRAVING AS SUCH? THE PROCESS IS DONE BY ACID WHICH LEAVES THE PRINT ON THE BLADE. THEY ARE VERY LIBERAL WITH THE DESCRIPTION? THAT IS TO SAY! NOT SAYING IT IS A FAKE K98 ETCHED BAYONET? NOR ETCHING DONE SOME 25YRS AFTER WW2 FINISHED TAKE NOTHING FOR GRANTED, AND BELIEVE NOTHING TO THE CONTRARY! STATING ANYTHING OTHER THAN AN HONEST APPRAISAL TO THE CONDITION OR IT NOT BEING A GENUINE ARTICLE!!!!!..RECENTLY ONE SOLD FOR $600 IN THE U.S.WITH SELLER NOT STATING IT'S REALITY NOR THAT IT WAS NOT A GENUINE WW2 ETCHING? BUT MORE INTERESTED IN MAKING A LOT OF MONEY,LEAVING YOU TO ASK THE RIGHT QUESTIONS.......DONT BE FOOLED! CROOKS DO WANT YOUR NAIVETY!ASK QUESTIONS? AS YOU PART WITH A LOT OF MONEY FOR SOMETHING WORTH WELL UNDER A $100,AND THEN ONLY IF YOU WANT A FAKE ITEM.THEY HAVE NO HISTORICAL VALUE TO A COLLECTOR, NOR AS WW2 ARTIFACT OF THIRD REICH ERA.REGARDS RAY...(WW2 GERMAN DRESS BAYONETS DO NOT COME UNDER THIS CATEGORY AS FAKE, NOR ETCHINGS AS FAKE, GOOD K98 HUNTING...AND DONT GIVE SELLERS YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY FOR FAKE K98S...REMEMBER THE VALUE IS IN THE BAYONET AS ORIGINAL..

Are you 100% sure it's fake? What are some ways to tell them apart?

I wonder, as the k98 bayonet isn't that rare, and this etching was invented as a way to make it seem desirable...are people paying for what they think is a rare item? Or paying for something they just enjoy? You'd have to be a jackass to think you were bidding on something like the examples you provided and getting it so cheap. Cheap if it were an original legit item. I have been known to pay well beyond acceptable price (to my wife) for items that I want (such as M1 Garandes) because I want to own all of them that I can. I think this may be just a situation where folks let their desire to own a rare part of the war overtake their common sense.

absolutely luke, nothing wrong with buying them,it's sellers not stating the reality of the k98! there lies the issue,I've seen numerous on ebay and very rarely if at all does the seller state in description the truth if indeed he knows the truth more to the point does he know anything about them? in most cases as in this one the k98 is poor condition, this ebay one even has been chromed at some point and that is coming off,but as you say the value is in how much you want it? not in its value as an artifact of ww2,but does the buyer know it's fake? that is the most important part,ray..

Nice spot Ray!!! Also, anyone dimwitted enough to pay for that item must have way too much money on his hands. Hell Im not a blade collector but--C'mon. Nowhad this been done to a Mauser 88 Bayonet??? things would be much different.
