I am trying to find out what formation a certain type of kreigsmarine soldier would belong to. He is wearing a dark blue uniform and has basic infantry gear such as a helmet, rifle, ammo pouches, breag bag, etc. On his left sleeve is a patch with a yellow star and his collar tabs are blue. Also below the patch on his sleeve is a cheviron which looks like the one for a grefeiter.

Sounds to me like you have a pic of a sailor-gefreiter with the boatswain career on official guard duty. Can you send a scan ?

It wouldnt be Coast Artillery as they wore Armylike unbiforms in grey-green or field gray.

But, then again, if they were short on proper type issue uniforms for the field, then that could be possible that he belonged to a Kriegsmarine Infantry Division.

Wolfgang Luth was Commander of 2nd battalion of a Kriegsmarine Infantry Division. I do not know for sure what kind of uniform he wore.
