    Carl,

I've just been told that apparently SS Sturmbannfuher Heinz Macher RK and EL Winner with 16 Pi Kompanie Regt "Deutschland" Das Reich Div passed away on 21/12/2001.Macher was one of the most well known combat soldiers of his Regiment, another sad day i'm afraid.

Paul, thank you for this information, and thank you Erich for the confirmation.

All I can say is that im glad some of us here are writing to these gents and have a growing collection of photos and writings from these men of history.

I NEED to get ny backside in gear--layoff collecting militaria for awhile and start writing to more of these men.

You are spot on the mark Carl, the time to be contacting these guys is NOW,while they can still tell us what we would like to know,so get writing everyone who wants to correspond with veterans or personally knows any WW2 veterans who can tell you of their experiences. This is one of my new years resolutions, to write to as many as i can and to keep writing regulary to those German and British veterans that i have known for some time.

Books are good but their is nothing better than the knowledge possessed by those who were there,

    Happy new year everyone,

Sadly there will be a large amount of men passing away this year as well. We need to not delay in the lest bit. My letters out to two RK night fighter pilots go out this next week, and am in process of putting a little something together for U-boot kommandeur Rolf Thomsen of U-1202. He is 86 years old.......

    Get with it guys !

I concur with both of you. The last piece of militaria I am allowing myself for awhile is a Bremen Hanseatic Cross, just to complete my Hanseatic Crosses collection.

Just last week I bought a combo collection of a Regimental badge to the 51st Infantry Division, with matching miniture stickpin. I couldnt pass up this set, they are enameled and are etched in real gold--not washed, and are mint.

Now, however, if I get lucky enough to sell off my comic book collection and reduce my debts, then I wil resume collection militaria (I have a weakness for collection Imperial German Crosses of all types) I think I now have about 15 Imperial crosses. I know--not much but--eh--im tryin' [IMG]

The only clause I have is if I get offered a nice 1870 EK2, or a Shinkle EK2. Other than these and the Bremen Cross, I do plan to not but ant militaria for a few months--till I have at least another 10 or so signed RKT photos, THEN, I will resume buying a piece here and there.
