sorry I am not able to read all of your message. Who was the Kommandeur ? What information do you have on your OPA if I may ask ? you have been able to interview him earlyier before his sickness correct ? There is an association of Sturmgeschutz crews that do meet and maybe our forum friend, Paul Errass from the UK can help with a proper name and contact fo you. I would imagine that StugAbt. 912 would have a yearly or evey other year treffen so if we could find out the persons responsible then you would be set. Add any pertinent info on him here as several of us are very much interested in what you have to share about him.

    Stug-Abt., later 912 Brigade.

    Hauptmann Kruck Kommandeur
    Oblt. Kicker Adjutant
    HQ batterie Oblt. Preussner
    1st Batterie Hauptmann Vogler
    2nd Batterie Oblt. Schulz-Streek
    3rd Batterie Oblt. Schönmann

now a question for you, your Opa served starting in June of 43 ? because the unit was not officialy in combat until April 1, 1943 with an attack towards Leningrad and fought in the northern sector of the Ost front.
I've got 4 1/2 pages on the unit as a bio.
During the two years the unit was in action Heeres-Sturmartillerie-Brigade 912 had destroyed 600 enemy tanks and lost 38 stugs. 12 offiziers killed and 25 badly wounded. Hauptmann Schubert was the last commanding offizier of the unit.

    Dear Mr. Brown,
my opa was born Aug,16 1908 in Erkner,Germany.
He was conscripted june,19. 1939 he got his papers
june,24.1939 shortly after he was trained as a
field medic and was wounded early in 1941. He was
the transfered to the Sturmgeschutjabteilung 912
as a panzer driver around August,27.1943.His
Kommandeur was Hauptmann u. Abteilungs . His tank
was hit by russin artillery at the battle for leningrad were he was the only surviver of his tank crew.To this day he still has shrapnel in his back from that battle. He is in a coma and is not expected to last the week. So i would like to find people he served with and talk about what they know about him. He is a very noble and brave man and does not like to talk about the war. This is why I'm asking for your help. thank you

    Ira Hebold. Gandson.

    Dear Sir -

I am always sorry to hear of the loss of a loved one during World War II from no matter which side the individual served on, but especially so from a German-Austrian perspective due to my own family history. I too lost a Great Uncle, one Karl Winkelmann, MIA and presumed KIA during the battle for the Seelow Heights east of Berlin.

    "Ich hatte eine kamerade"

    Be good to each other.

    Hello Ira,

Would love to help you as much as i can to find out some details of your Opa's war service. Many of the Sturmgeschutz Abteilungs and Brigades do have veterans organisations and the Sturmartillerie which was the Army branch name for the Sturmgeshutz units have a veteran organisation,i will have to check my records and come back to you.

Do you have any documents regarding awards which were given to your Opa? This may be how you are thinking about the name of his Commander as the documents will say Hauptmann u Abteilungs Kommandeur followed by a signature. This means Captain and Battalion Commander and the signature will be the name of the person.Hope i've explained that ok??

Following are Knights Cross Winners from Sturmgeschutz Brigade 912

    Hauptmann Josef "Sepp" Brandner
    Leutnant Alfred Egghardt
    Hauptmann Richard Engelmann
    Hauptmann Otto Schubert
    Unteroffizier Josef Schwarzenbacher

    Hi Ira and Paul,

Sorry to butt in here. I'd like to give this a try:

    Certificate

With the best wishes for a happy life, the Sturmgeschutzabteilung 912 puts 500 RM (ReichsMark) in the cot of little JUTTA, (child of) our comrade Erich Hebold, as a 1st birthday present.

In the field, August 27 1943

If anybody can make thsi translation better, by all means ;)

The other person you are looking info on, is he originally from Hungary? I have a collegue by the same last name whose family is from there. Also, are you sure his name was Frank with a K, and not Franz with a Z? Do you know his date or year of birth? There is a German site which list many German casualties and where they are buried. I tried to look up Frank Horvath but there was no listing, but several for Franz Horvath. Also a possible place of birth would be helpfull.
