My cousin, Harold T. Gibbs was shot down on the eve of his 21st birthday near Metz in France. When I was in my teens, sadly a rather long time ago, I visited his grave in a country churchyard. He was buried there with at least four other members of the crew. Is it possible to find out where he is buroed, so I can visit the grave again, and any details of his war service and his death? many thanks. Angela
Hello Angela. Sgt H Gibbs and his crew are buried at Benestroff (Moselle , 50km south east of Metz). The CWGC records have recored him as Henry (instead of Harold) but if this the same man he was from Warwick and was the son of Charles and Sarah Gibbs. He was flying Halifax III serial LV958 code EY-O from 78 Squadron when he was shot down in the night of April 24/25th 1944 near Metz. Halifax Abandonned at 20.000 following a loss of power from both port engines. Operation : Karlsrushe. crew: F/O Mc Cartney + Sgt H Gibbs + F/S N W Brown (pow) F/O M M Holgate (pow) Sgt J E Waltham + SgT J A E Skeat + Sgt T P Bourque RCAF + Note that there were two crew who bailed out and were taken pow.
