Ah, now I see. If you look in Box #32, you'll see three campaigns; Normandy, Central Europe, and Northern France. He was entitled to all three stars.
We still have the mystery surrounding the award of a battle star for the Central Europe Campaign. Dates for that campaign are: March 22 to May 11, 1945. He was a POW at that time. The award may have been a mistake or something else is going on? I don't know enough about campaign awards to even offer a theory.
NARA shows this on PW status. http://aad.archives.gov/aad/display-partial-records.jsp?dt=466&sc=11675%2C11660%2C11679%2C11667%2C11669%2C11676%2C11672%2C11673&cat=WR26&tf=F&bc=%2Csl%2Cfd&q=&btnSearch=Search&as_alq=&as_anq=&as_epq=&as_woq=&nfo_11675=V%2C8%2C1900&op_11675=0&txt_11675=35878490&nfo_11660=V%2C24%2C1900&op_11660=0&txt_11660=&nfo_11679=V%2C1%2C1900&cl_11679=&nfo_11667=V%2C2%2C1900&cl_11667=&nfo_11669=V%2C2%2C1900&cl_11669=&nfo_11676=V%2C1%2C1900&cl_11676=&nfo_11672=V%2C1%2C1900&cl_11672=&nfo_11673=V%2C3%2C1900&cl_11673= SERIAL NUMBER 35878490 NAME MARSHALL ORAN GRADE, ALPHA PVT Private SERVICE CODE ARMY ARM OR SERVICE Infantry ARM OR SERVICE CODE INFANTRY DATE REPORT: DAY (DD) 30 DATE REPORT: MONTH (MM) 07 DATE REPORT: YEAR (Y) 1944 RACIAL GROUP CODE WHITE STATE OF RESIDENCE Kentucky TYPE OF ORGANIZATION Branch Immaterial/Infantry Division Band/Dental Corps/Medical Department PARENT UNIT NUMBER 115 PARENT UNIT TYPE Group/Regiment/Commands/System LATEST REPORT DATE: DAY (DD) 01 LATEST REPORT DATE: MONTH (MM) 06 LATEST REPORT DATE: YEAR (Y) 1945 SOURCE OF REPORT Individual has been reported through sources considered official.
