    I seemed to remember some Orcs with white painted faces on their shields, so I guessed Saruman. When that was wrong, I thought it must be white faced in another context. And Gollum's expressions for the sun & moon came to mind.

    Although not easy, it's quite logical, and in no way a trick question. I'm confident that you'll get it soon. Once you get one of the two, the other will shortly follow I'm sure.

    Well, I'll rest on my laurels. My knowledge of LOTR is pretty hazy -- read the books but only seen the first movie (plus that g*d-awful cartoon version!). Having said that, I listen to the radio version (all 13 hours) regularly.
