Ok...I've just heard this one. Can anyone confirm it's truth or otherwise? Apparently in 1942 Lucille Ball got some temporary dental fillings done, which picked up spurious morse transmissions from a Japanese spy in California. The spy was arrested by the FBI, but there don't seem to be any offical records of the incident. Did it actually happen? snopes.com: Lucille Ball's Fillings
Have heard this actually....though my memory says she picked up the local radio instead...There is proof that these fillings can act as an antennae...using your skull as a amplifier...
The Mythbusters looked into this, I don't remember exactly what they found. FBI records only had a single line entry on the matter, IIRC. IF they'd found a secret radio station there would have been more, I do believe.
I think the story came out during her testimony before the "House Commision on Un American Activities" or "Warren Commision". Ball was a registered Communist and held party meetings at her house; she was even appointed the Chairman of the California Communist party in the late 30's.
Back when Johnny Carson was still the host of The Tonight Show, she was a guest and retold the same story much to the amusement/amazement of Mr. Carson. I remember the show quite well, because she was so certain this had happened, and wasn't "pulling anybody's leg". Whether or not it was true she did "pick up radio waves" in her fillings, she believed she had.
Thanks chaps. This is the link I got it from- We've Got Mail! - Lucy's "Radio-Active" Teeth It was in a discussion in another forum of an unidentifed 'hum' in certain parts of Scotland, and turns out to be a world-wide problem- The Hum There are papers in there detailing instances of people being able to hear certain rf frequencies- http://homepages.tesco.net/~John.Dawes2/electric.htm
How awesome were the times and stories back then? Hollywood war intrigue. Thanks for bringing up that Lucy was a communist. That just seems so incongruous. Lucy was apple pie. Was there no backlash regarding her politics?.....I wonder if Lucy might have been into the pills too much. Back then, pills were medicine. The good ones anyway....
