In command of the first New Zealand Contingent that arrived at Suez on February 12 was Major General Bernard Cyril Freyberg, V.C. D.S.O., who had a distinguished career in the First World War, having served with the Royal Naval Division at Antwerp, in Gallipoli, and in France. He was nine times wounded and six times mentioned in dispatches.
