And all this over cartoons in a WESTERN paper! Years ago, the comedian Dave Allen used to regularly lampoon the Pope, Catholic priests and religion generally on his TV show. Did irate Catholics (or anyone else) react like this? No, those offended just stopped watching his show.
Coming so soon after Palestinians elected a bunch of terrorists who vowed to wipe out Israel, and Muslim protestors in London demanded more September 11th attacks on the West, are there STILL middle class western 'liberals' naive enough to portray Palestinians as innocent victims of Israeli 'aggression', and Islam as a 'peaceful' religion? This lot seem to think Islamic law applies everywhere.
You know the really annoying bit? All those middle class liberals are conspicuous by the way they seem to have gone to ground over this; given their past penchant for protests on behalf of Muslims generally, I would have expected them to be at the forefront of condemnation for this blatant political violence.

Not to get off the subject but Dave Allen At Large came on here right after Monty Python's Flying Circus. Never before have I laughed as hard as I would when watching those two shows.

    Historian,
    The signs are everywhere.
Islamic unrest in France, overt support for the destruction of Israel in Iran, not to mention the nuclear threat, the election of Hamas to power in the Palestinian territories, further Islamic unrest supposedly regarding cartoons, unending support for terrorism throughout the Moslem world,
    including Pakistan, Afgahnistan, and Indonesia.

It would seem that the "free" world has a real problem on it's hands...again, and it all feels familiar somehow.

Muslims always preach their Islamic religion is one of peace? From what I have seen on the news over the years well the evidence suggests not.

    Bill,
That's exactly what I mean; you took it in the spirit in which it was intended.
What worries me is the deafening silence from the usual 'professional protestors'. Are they too busy trying to work out who to blame it on this time?

I have to confess that I'm getting as bored with the Middle East as I used to be about Northern Ireland.

If it weren't for the extreme bad luck of oil having to occur in that particular region in such quantity, those people would still be eating camel dung and nobody would ever hear about them. They would be just another curiosity for National Geographic.

In any case, oil is running out anyway so they'll be losing relevance over time.

Here is an interesting quote from Ibn Warraq, executive director of the Institute for the Secularization of Islamic Society.
"There may be moderate Muslims, but Islam itself is not moderate. There is no difference between Islam and Islamic fundamentalism. At most there is a difference of degree but not of kind."

    Religion of peace?

When the Islamic faith is the only faith practiced upon the face of the planet it will be a religion of peace. Until that time there will be unbelievers who will, by their very unbelief, commit acts of sacrilige that will call for their deaths.

Killing unbelievers is nothing new to religions, because people practice them. The books of the Old Testament seem to carry this message, the Koran carries this message. I cannot find it in the books of the New Testament, but it has been practiced anyway. People perpatrate their foul deeds and look for some justification to rationalize their bloodlusts.

I personally don't want to have some kind of conflict happen where the believers of the Islamic faith are my enemy. There does seem to be developing a kill or be killed situation, though. How will the world handle that. Religious freedom is important because the human being has a need for that form of expression. Extremes of religious belief that exclude the rights of others to exist will not be tolerated for long though. I wonder what will happen?

Judging by the reactions to a cartoon then it maybe time to just nuke the Middle East till it glows...

I dunno whats up with the world and since the July bombings in London I have found myself to becoming slightly more 'anti' in my outlook to religous groups. Not just Muslim/Islamic fundamentalism but also Christian Fundamentalism and the new wave of rather disturbing US evangelicals who seem to deny evolution and science and seem content to plunge the world back a few hundred years...

Personally I would just ban most of them... All they tend to do is secularise society and allow the breeding grounds for individuals to twist their words to a message of hate.

I mean the crusades werent exactly Christianitys finest hour, and in Arab culture the crusades are not the ancient history they are to us.

Showing its true colours? Or merely reminding us that they havent changed since the time of Saladin and they have had enough?

To form a major threat they need a leader, a Mahdi, or someone in an unapproacable position of power willing to stand upto the 'West'. What they need to unite them is religion, they already possess that.

I said many moons ago that there is the chance of a titanic struggle in the Middle East. I think its always been there.

It just needed someone to lit the blue touch paper and then to retire to a safe distance. It seems these days there is no shortage of people with matches... On either side.

I've always thought 20 KT on the Kaba'h would be a good start. Let these jerks pray to a radioactive crater.

Well, that is a bit extreme over a cartoon, but this is really just the latest round in an ongoing slow escallation to an all out conflict between Islam / Arabic culture and the West. I'm glad I retired from the military.

Extremism is despicable from anywhere... Islamic terrorist as well as Bible-maniacs (pseudo-christian 'evangelical' extremists).

I don't care if they say we're Infidels, I don't care if they say sodomites, Jews and atheists are all going to Hell because of what they say the Leviticus says... as long as they leave people alone. Well, they don't.

Now they're bombing the Danish Ambassy, the Apostolic See in Baghdad...

What the-heck are we waiting for? Some stupid moron to nuke Tel Aviv or a couple planes flying into Saint Peter's Basilica?

I of course don't agree in nuking Mecca, but something has to be done. Though, of course, we Westeners are too worried about satisfying our instincts and feeding our selfish individuality...
