Here are four more pictures of Carl's collection. First is Oberst Werner Molders fighter being decorated.
The very last picture taken of Wolfgang Luth on the Conning tower of the U-181 October 1943 This was just as he got back from one of his longest combat patrols.
RKT Johann Mohr back from very successfull combat patrol. This men and his crew were soon to be killed.
concerning the markers on the tail of the airplane. Why are the french ones a single block and the americans double?
Gents: Don't think that is Wener's tail of his a/c. his oakleaves were received after his 40th victory and the swords after his 72nd victory. the big thing is he never flew against US a/c. A couple of other things too...... The machine is actually an Fw 190A-4 and flown by Oblt. Sepp Würmheller with 76 kills of 9./JG 2, summer 1943. ~E
could it be a jg-51? I saw where he did fly one. The tail does kind of look like one too. the second one down on this site. http://www.cbrnp.com/profiles/quarter2/bf109e.htm
David : I have a pic of Sepp hugging the right side of this tail plane. It is a definate confirmation ! Werner never flew Fw's anyway. JG 51 did not receive Fw 190's till their stint in Russia later in the war......as told to me by ground attack ace Horst Petzschler flying with JG 51. Sepp shot down 13 US bombers and the dual marks mean bombers adding to points. His final kills were 102 before losing his life in Luftkampf (air combat). ~E
well David, I am sure friend Carl will see these postings of ours and hope he does not get too angry as he was sold a bogus labeled pic ? ~E
Hi Erich--nope Im not angry--it also isnt a bogus pic--I got the name wrong when I sent these to Volkbert. It is indeed Wurmheller. I had seen a picture in a book at B&N a few weeks ago--I had copied down the info--book it was in--page--auther etc--but I misplaced my note. Anyway--it definately is Wurmhellers aircraft. When I had made this copy and wrote the info on the back--was about a yuear or so ago and at that time--I did not have the correct info at that time.
well I feal better with your information about this item. did think you had been had by some dealer.... good ! ~E
Not at all After all-he is also the one I got the Johann Mohr, Joachim Heidschmidt, Peter Kiesegen, and several other pics from.
I believe the second shot is a Bf 109E red 16 or 18 ?, 18 would be pretty high for an a/c early war but...... possibly of JG 51 as it appears behind the first chaps head a Falke emblem ~E
You have some sharp eyes--I never would have noticed or thought to look under a magnifying glass--to look at the aircraft more sharply.
just my silly Luftie senses acting up also the a/c is in dark green almost black which was very early war and then changed to different shades of greys/blues. the ammo is of course for the cowling Mg 17's and I cannot tell Carl are some of the tips black ? indicating AP as yellow would indicate HE rounds and so would light blue. Colours in these early or any WW 2 blk/weiße pics are hard to discern. ~E
Glad you can tell what you could. I would not be able to tell what other colors are with the certainty that you can. My eyes ain't good enough to even try to guess. The colors appear to me to be very dark but??
Carl, the dark greens were standard for the time on all 109's. I have a nice line-up pic of JG 53 birds with the Pik As emblem which is the black ace of spades on their engine cowlings. The a/c are all dark green/ almost black but the coloration seemed to have changed soon enough.... ~E
