What about the advances in artillery shells? especially the proximity shells that explode above the ground. To the U.S. it was a great advantage in the Battle of the Bulge because it spread great fear in the germans with the proximity shell. The Germans also used a antitank concrete warhead that would go all the way through the tank sucking everything through the other side. Burning alive is a bad way to go, but being sucked through a hole is also a bad Idea. After the war the British did a study with sheep in old sherman tanks and shot these shells through the tank, and they said that sometimes their would be nothing left in the tank.

White phospherous could be bad, but we were always taught to pack a phospherous burn with mud, to block the oxygen needed for it to burn; or, we could make your own mud with common dirt and water from your canteen, or urine if necessary.
