Shinglehouse, a strong chance our fathers knew each other. My dad was also in Dog company of the 47 Tank Battalion, 14 armored. He drove a light tank (M5 Stuart i think, not sure), Like a lot of vets,my dad would not talk much about the war...did tell my uncle that after VE day he was transfered to truck dring duties, transported stuff from the Eagles Nest to a headquarters somewhere. My dad was TECH 4 JOHN ALLEN SMITH, born in Louisiana and met my Mom in Louisville,KY (40 miles nort of FT KNOX) where he raised 4 kids and spent the rest of his life, died in 1991. I've attached 2 photo's, he'S the tall guy standing in center and the guy holding the MP40 smg sitting on the tank.
Welcome on this fine forum. I hope you'll meet some fine peole here who'll be able to help you fill some gaps.
Thank you for your posting. My grandfather, Jay McNaney was in the 47th Tank Division. During WW2. He was a Sargent in D company. He passed away in 2007. He spoke often about his days with the, " Liberators. " I only wish I'd written it all down. He was born and raised in Elmira, NY.
