OK, it's the last line of the movie.

Let's make it the last three lines of the movie:

"I think they were trying to surrender."
    "Sorry, sir"
"Try and be a bit more careful next time."

One more hint - the movie was mentioned recently in another post on ww2f, not in quizzes.

Sorry to break in. At the risk of seeming like a wet blanket, I really have to point something out. I am a movie nut, I really am. I would have loved to "jump in there" and play this game, but I find the "Calvinball rules" a little off-putting. Here is how the thread started in #1:

Its probably time to recapitulate the rules of this game for those who do not have the patience to re-read all 40 pages of this thread. Below from #13:

So far so good, but soon things became confusing as people quoted movies that have nothing to do with world war two. They were reminded to stick to the above quoted rules, so I quoted them above as a reminder.

I nstarted getting flustered when Formerjughead started changing the rules and banning movies and whole decades of movies seemingly at random and without really justifying why. please note that there is no hint at a discussion about these choices or how they were arrived at within the thread.

#662: "We don't do The Pacific,or Band of Brothers or Saving Private Ryan or Pearl Harbor... Or pretty much anything made prior to 1990."
#801:"That had better not be from The English Patient"
#858:"There are certain movies that have been forbidden... Pearl Harbor, Wind Talkers, Inglorious Basterds, We try to stay away from anything that has come out in recent history". "We don't do Band Of Brothers, Saving Private Ryan, Pearl Harbor, The Pacific or Hogan's Heroes."
the short list changes again on p.20 "Band of Brothers, The Pacific, Pearl Harbor, Valkyrie, Flags Of Our Fathers, Letters From Iwo Jima, Saving Private Ryan."

... then from A-58 - #573: "We're not doing that movie (Where Eagles Dare) anymore either"

But please note that #851: "...From Wake Island... A classic shoot-em up and a great source of one-liners for this thread."

(which, I note, has been liberally quoted practically every other page ad nauseum, along with Kelly's Heroes, the Devil's Brigade and In Harm's Way)

So I ask... Can someone who wasn't actually alive during world war two play?

This is mean't as a friendly tease to you guys, by the way.... Don't rip my head off....

We now return you to your regularly scheduled program:

Well, you see, we're dealing heavily with Brad (FJH) and his attention span is less than mine, roughly that of adolescent gnat. He working on extending it aeb by the lack of time spent in the cooler by him over the past couple of years. He didn't earn the moniker "Cooler King" for doing nothing.

This forum operates under Miguel's* Razor, which something along the lines of "Any thread worth its salt deserves to be dragged off subject." Or something like that...the official quote is shrouded in antiquity and subject to translation issues from Portuguese using a Donald Duck voice, but you get the idea...I hope.

*Miguel is the real world name of a former poster here named Za Rodinu, who carried his toys to our sister site, WW2Talk, since his country of origin is closer to the UK that the US. I understand that he farts in the bathtub and eats the bubbles, but that is hearsay, I suspect.

Those rules are to prevent people who have only watched recent movies from quoting them ad nauseum. The exception is "Pearl Harbor", that is banned from use due to it's lack of respect for the genre.

We also try to use some of the more popular WW2 movies or the obscure movies with well known actors.

"The report of my death was an exaggeration" , supposing Wikipedia is accepteable here :)

I'm too busy to be in too many places at the same time, but the (incorrect) bathtub allusion was brought to my attention and I couldn't help but respond. As a matter of fact fart bubbles are a source of fun if you carry a cigarette lighter into the bathtub and wait for them to surface. Sidney New Year fireworks? Not even close :fire1:

As for the rest, it's complete balderdash :D I'll leave you a quote from an unfortunately non-war movie, but Pork & Beans are a peaceful people as we can't afford otherwise.

Hotel Clerk: [indicating the Portugee] Er, this gentleman is with your party?

Jonathan Clark: This gentleman is no gentleman. He's a sea-going thief who makes his living stealing seals from the Russians. He neither bathes, shaves, nor knows the feel of good clean linen. When the moon is bright, he stays out all night and howls like a dog, then curls up and sleeps on the floor till midday. That right, Portugee?

Portugee: He knows me pretty good.

    They way I'm playing is:

    1. Wait for my answer to be confirmed as correct by the poster.
    2. WWII movie.
    3. No 'Pearl Harbor'

As Bubba said to Forrest: "That's about it."

    I salute your endevour.

Oh, God, I can't believe I'm going to defend Pearl Harbor (of all the movies on your list) ... But WWII is not really a genre, but a historical period. The genre would be "spy" "action" "comedy" "romance" "buddy cop" "navy" "chick flick" "submarine" "sci-fi" "horror" "historical" etc. as well as hybrids and sub-genres of the above. Pearl Harbor (quality notwithstanding) fits comfortably within several of those.

I get that movies become more commonly quotable with time as they sink into the general zeitgeist, so eliminating movies made in the last 10 to 20 years makes sense... I guess... Please forgive me if I scribble outside the lines every once in a while...

In any case my main point was to re-copy and consolidate the rules into one more recent post. Mission accomplished.

I've been digging to try to remember a movie that ends with

"I think they were trying to surrender"
    "sorry, sir"
"Try and be a bit more careful next time"

    so familiar...

The only bells it rings, at the end of a movie, is "The Big Red One" but I am not too sure about that even.
Might be time for another hint

Sorry, little busy over the weekend. It's the end of Play Dirty starring Michael Caine, in which he's a British officer assigned to an irregular unit, basically a gang of criminals, assigned a mission behind German lines in North Africa.

    SPOILER ALERT!!

At the end, Caine and his cohort are wearing German uniforms when the British army, now on the offensive, overruns the town they're in. As they try to identify themselves a British soldier, reacting instinctively, shoots them both, leading to the dialogue cited.

I think I may have it. Is it Rogue Male?

The Germans captured Peter O'Tool after he tried to shoot Hitler and I think that is how they began his interrogation.
