Hey guys. I have a WW2 navy jacket (is that the right term?) that I got from my grandfather and don't know a whole lot about. I have a few questions about it, any help is appreciated. 1. Is this rank insignia for a petty officer third class? Does the cross mean he was a medical officer? What does the golden eagle on the left mean? 2. There are Chinese dragons on the insides of the cuffs. Was this common? Either way, why does it have this?
The cross is for a Pharmacist's Mate He was a Petty Officer 3rd Class Master Chief WWII US Navy enlisted ranks rates, branches and badges The medal on the right breast is his Honorable Discharge pin (the "Ruptured Duck"). As for the dragons on the inside of the cuffs, I don't have a clue. Maybe someone else can chime in.
Dragons were done while in a liberty port.Add a little pizzaz to the jumper.Easily hidden from officers who froundupon them. Equivilant to a tour jacket for the army.
That is a dress blue jumper with a Pharmacist mate 3rd Class "crow" and the "ruptured duck" honorable discharge ribbon on it. The liberty cuffs (that's what a sailor would call them) are very typical for the period. I have seen some jumpers that were completely embroidered on the inside in silk etc., that belonged to old hands.
