Hi all. I have been around the planet for 65 years and inherited my Dad's 1942 GPW a few years a go. It was in the family since 1949. Was probably a navy jeep as it appears to have been painted a grayish color long before he picked it up. I have since done a number or things to bring it to a semi restored situation, tho it is now an army jeep and depicts a vehicle in my fathers unit - 30th Division, 117th Regiment, 2nd Battalion, Co C. I would prefer , however, to eventually turn it into a Cavalry jeep from either the 30th Recon Troop or one of the other recon squadrons that were in the area at that time.To that end,I am looking for pictures of any jeeps from any of those units so I can finish the restoration. I do belong to Redball express out of Jersey and enjoy driving the jeep in our local Memorial day and veteran's day parades. I also go into the local HS to talk to seniors about my father's service in WWII on veteran's day as well. The jeep comes along and actually drives right up onto the stage!! So, if anyone knows of where I can find some pictures, or knows of anyone who may have knowledge of them, I would be most appreciative of the information. Joe
First of all, welcome to the site JJP! Second of all, pictures please! I'd love to see the jeep if you have photos. it's very good that you are helping preserve a piece of history. Slipdigit is your man for 30 Recon. He wrote a book on a veteran of Old Hickory Recon.
So, how does one post pictures on here?? I tried putting one into my avatar but drag and drop didn't seem to work nor did finding a file that i have. hmmmmmm!!
Go to the top right of the page and hover over your username. You should get a drop down menu. On the left, click on Avatar. You should be able to upload a new image from there.
If you continue to have trouble with your avatar or with other images, just email the images you want and I'll sort you out. You already have my email.
Google Camp Whittington, Camp Drew or any camps in occupational Japan and you'll jeeps galore. Mostly MP units that patrolled Tokyo. MASH come alive.
Joseph, Welcome. I have several photos of 30th Recon Jeeps, but none that show the front bumper. I can post them if you would like. I published a book almost five years ago about a soldier who served with the 30th. We talked about unit markings on vehicles. He said they painted over the unit markings, leaving only the vehicle number on the hood. They did have unit markings before Normandy and after the war ended. I can help you with it them if you would like.
Well, got a pic in the avatar. Not sure if you can make it large enough to see it better everyone, but if not, I will try to upload the pic itself. I'm driving and my cousin is the passenger. Veteran's day parade November 2017.
Thanks. I was surprised to see the photo after the parade. Evidently there was a prof. photog. there and he put them on line for all to see! May try to get a few more up later.
