Which ones do you like, which ones do you hate? Any period can be chosen here, as I believe that as many WW2 movies were made as there are movies about all other wars put together. :D

I personally liked the recent 'The Last samurai' film a lot. It had good action and it wasn't too standard, which often happens with these movies and which turns them into boring long hauls.

    There would be:

    - Waterloo
    - Platoon
    - Hamburger Hill
    - Nothing new in the West(WW1)
    - Braveheart(altough not a classic war movie)
    And many more....

The English version of 'Im Westen nichts neues' is called All Quiet on the Western front. Really good movie indeed, probably the best WW1 movie ever.

Waterloo is a film made in the 70's.
It features Rod Steiger as Napoléon Bonaparte.
It is a french-italian coproduction and was filmed in the Soviet Union, with thousands of red army soldiers as statists.
I think it is rather good, it is very spectacular, the actors are good and it is historically correct, but of course technically, it is far away from modern productions.

Doesn´t exactly sound like something I would find in my local video store. Too bad, because it sounds like a movie I really would want to watch. Rod Steiger you say ? It´s the dialogue in English then ?

I'm sure you could find Waterloo quite easily.

BTW: It is an amazing film, a true historic epic. Thousands upon thousands of soldiers in one shot, no CGI either.

The only thing I noticed about the film is that the Heavy cavalry seemed to be wielding 1796 pattern light cavalry sabres, you would have fought that the heavies would carry the 1796 heavy dragoon.

Does any one remember the five part mini series, in the 70's, about the Napolenic Wars? I was around 7 years old ans was facinated by the whole thing.

    Cheers!

I saw this mini series made for television ( BBC I believe ) about Queen Elisabeth I a couple of years ago. I think Glenda Jackson played the part of Elisabeth. Probably made in the early seventies. I thought it was very good, and I would recommend it to anyone interested in that part of British History.

There was a movie about her on Dutch television just a couple of days ago, but i didn't like it. It focused way too much on her love life, and the wars she fought are hardly even commented :x

    Gettysburg

    The Lost Battalion

Captain Horatio Hornblower (with Gregory Peck in the title role)

    Gods and Generals

    Damn the Defiant!

    Zulu

    Zulu Dawn

    Zeppelin

    ANZACS: The War Down Under

I highly recommend these movies. Some aren't as good as others, but the overall quality is quite good. Zulu, BTW, was actor Michael Caine's first movie.

That Gettysburgh Movie just passed on television here some days ago, and I liked it very much.
It's a pity I don't know that much more about American Civil WAr.

It's not exactly a war movie, but 'The Good the bad & the Ugly' starring Clint Eastwood has quite a nice Civil War scene in it. This more or less started my interest in this war.

You know, I can't quite picture Gregory Peck as Hornblower because in a recent series, this role is played by Ioan Gruffudd, and this actor is very young. It is the only Hornblower series I have seen, but I enjoyed it very much. Especially Robert Lindsay as Admiral Pellew is absolutely fantastic. :D

Oh, absolutely! I have enjoyed the series *very* much. :D

The movie was made back in the 1950s. Peck did a very good job in the role, and British audiences apparently had no problem with him in the role. He is the only American actor I know of who could play a British character without drawing flak from the Brits for it.
