Silk or nylon stockings were in extremely short supply by the summer of 1942, despite the presence of American GI’s In Britain who could sometimes get hold of stockings from the US. Most women had to find ingenious methods of dressing their legs. Favourites were rubbing gravy browning or shoe polish mixed with cream on to the legs, or just leaving the legs natural and pencilling, or painting, on a seam to give the illusion of stockings. The device here was designed by Max Factor and was intended to enable the user to draw the perfect seam.
