When I was on Peleliu, LHA-5, that was dead bang. I did get questions about a Gunny that retired near me when I was in high school.

It's always been one of my opinions that Lego's are one of the best toys ever invented. Both my boys have fond memories of playing with Lego castles and knights, pirates and wild west sets. Me, being a big kid myself, fully appreciate the playability and fun quotient of a toy. The wife doesn't understand it, but she's never been a little boy. The boys and I (then the nephews, and now the grandsons and their friends) can play for 8-10 hours straight, the wives and mothers occasionally bring food and drinks. They're amazed that the kids can stay focused for so long and when we finally have to quit, they want to keep playing, and beg for more time. It's all about engaging their imagination and building them a mental world to explore. My older son and oldest grandson are really into Lego's at the moment, and they sent me a link to this incredible Lego build.

I think Carronade and OpanaPointer will appreciate, because IIRC, both were at one time "gator" sailors. CAC might as well because this class warship visits Australia regularly.

Ran across this update on the model and while watching learned they have a USS Missouri model as well, so I went looking. Here's what I found.

Males have a number of natural urges (a crap load actually)…Some destructive, some constructive…One of our traits is the innate desire to build…or construct. Some groups have it more than others…males have more gray brain matter than females. Gray brain matter is linked to a number of things, including spacial awareness and deep thought. - Females have more white brain matter, linked to social awareness and languages to name but two.
The two hemispheres of men and women’s brains are wired completely differently…Some people say that your sex is your genitals…Not so say I…We all begin in our mothers womb as females…some stay that way others grow a penis OFF the female genitals. So the two genitals are in fact one developed off the other. No, instead a person’s sex should be determined by the physiology of their brain.

Yeah, I'd love to visit and see that model. Spent some time on Okinawa and we went ashore in Japan once and had a battalion hump up Mt. Fuji. Never got to spend any time or explore the main islands.
I wish they'd open back up to the public, the Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola. They had some incredible ship models. They had one in 1/72d scale that was not only a large-scale model but had all 110 or so aircraft in the air group. Impressive.

I climbed Fuji, met Dai Butsu and "commanded" Musashi from her bridge.

When I was at Gitmo the target sub was tied up on the near side and the "sub barge", aka saloon, was on the far side. There was a ~2 foot gap between the barge and the pier. You entered on a narrow wooden ramp. If you got a snoot full it was possible to miss the ramp and the pier and wind up in the water.

Can't complain about Navy chow. I deployed on the USS Manitowoc LST-1180, she had won some award for best chow in the Navy like the year before and had a plaque to said award. The food was really good and plentiful.

To Half-track: Yep, the most "isolated" duty available at the time that didn't have a few hundred feet of snow.
