    I agree to that.

Celebrating victory to his death is fine, but it's not necessary to go all crazy like it's the superbowl...

Osama may be dead, but Al Quaeda is not. This terrorism network is global. I think it's far too soon to proclaim victory.

There could be backlashes to Bin Laden's death, and the most vonerable are our troops. We sometimes forget the dangers our troops face fighing against terrorism .

(and when I mean our troops i'm not just refering to American, but also British, Canadian, European, & other coalition forces stationed overseas.)

I think we should stand up and back those seals that put themselves at risk to enter the compound of Osama Bin Laden, one would expect with the experience of our troops and so many who have been lost to those who were wired or in possession of triggering devices that could have killed everyone landed on that compound. Hasn't this been the way of the terrorists? How soon we forget. That seal was so right to interpret whatever movements he made that were not pure surrender to be an action designed to kill and maim our troops. That seal had his own life and the lives of his brothers in that trigger finger and no one should be worrying about his action that was entirely protective and defensive. Everyone would like bin Laden to be taken alive but our troops have so little leeway to act if they are to stay on the safe side. God be with them.

I've thought about the US citizens cheering in the streets for a while now, and you know what? I'm OK with it. Let's cut the victims in NY some slack.

It's not something I feel compelled to do myself, but the people really cheering in NY were the ones he actually attacked. NY was the city where skyscrapers fell around their ears, and their celebration seems to be more a gasp of collective relief rather than a jubilant bloodlust. From what I can recall, there haven't been any street celebrations in the US for any military success since well before 9/11, this was for Bin Laden alone.

If a terrorist wants to attack US interests, the fact Osama has been killed will motivate them alone, a street protests will not inflame them any more than that. In fact, a single errant drone strike in Pakistan that mistakenly kills a civilian will foment much more anti-American sentiment than a street celebration over the death of a legitimate enemy.

I stand with all Americans in grim satisfaction with the knowledge that this evil man was surgically snubbed from the planet. I didn't stand on a street corner waving a flag myself, but I don't question the collective reaction of the people who were the very target of the massacre.

I had asked earlier about the helicopter going down. Mech fail didn't sound right on a vehicle that was gonna be involved in one of the most important missions in decades. I thought maybe a rotor hit a tree or gunfire...We prolly learned a lesson trying to free hostages in Iran when dust caused mech fail and abort mission on a Blackhawk(?)... I think the AV8b (harrier) was having issues with loss of lift in similar conditions and rectified with strake's on belly.
Wouldn't an experienced pilot recognize an issue such as high fences causing loss of lift? Maybe he recognized the problem and just went in anyway?
Also mentioned the use of a female human shield, which now seems like it was more of a "salt in the wound" type of add on after the fact.

i though that the people where so happy of his death because he was a bad guy, now some one told me today that the people are so happy because they think some thing will change because of his death and there will be less terrorists attacks and such and that his death will change some thing
    I LAUGHED SO HARD !
and there is no real proof that he was a part of the 9/11 attack !
as well the buildings crashed that way that like it was planed for months on crashing the buildings, they crashed in a perfect way, i am just sain

You are wrong on the "proof" of the 9/11, and his being part of it. He bragged that he was part of the planning, that he funded it, and it only cost him $500,000.

What you are "...just sain (sic)" is also proven bogus by structural engineers, I don't think the attackers anticipated they would collapse in the way they did, but their (twin tower) design was instrumental in the way they "pancaked" down floor onto floor like dominoes falling vertically.

As to hope that his death will change things in the region, there are some in the US who hope this accelerate US withdrawl from Afganistan. Not so sure myself on that point.

I agree, I think the problems that have been created during the time since 9/11 will not be solved by the death of this man, even though I welcomed the news. The terrorists aren't controlled by him, and probably never really were, he was a figurehead and the money-guy. It may dry up some funding for them, but won't accelerate the coalition forces withdrawal from Afghanistan.

It may, but I'm skeptical. I hate to sound heartless here, but even with that said I believe we should be out of the area and let the tribes and sects just go on killing each other when they aren't fighting invaders. The Afghans have been doing that since Alexander the Great, and our coalition forces being there isn't going to change that behavior.

Democracy cannot be imposed from without, trying to do so is a futile and costly enterprise. Just my opinion.

Jane's reports, based upon the photographic evidence from the scene, that "the US military may have operated a hitherto undisclosed classified helicopter type" in the raid on OBL's compound.

The design suggests stealth characteristics, says Jane's.

Here is a story and photos from the Daily Mail:

Here is Aviation Week's take on it:

There is a mountain of proof the Osama orchestrated 9/11, and the reason the buildings came down is because huge aircraft smashed into them. But I am just sane.

Here is an interesting article about the "importance" of bin Laden, and funding for "the source", and whether or not his removal changed the "scene" a bit.

Top it off with now that "next guy" in line (Ayman al-Zawahiri) has to really be looking over his shoulder too.

The last 10 years has got nowt compared to Europe when I grew up. The "war on terror" was not new to us. OBL was a criminal, like the other pathetic criminals who lie slain across Europe and north africa (cheers Foreign Legion and SAS).

If W had bothered to talk to us (left wing/socialist/gay) europeans we might have gotten to the crims without bankrupting western economy.

The military isn't bankrupting America-it's medicare/medicaid, plus pet projects of Reps/Senators-fattening the wallets of friends at home in spite of the long term effect of almost irrepairedly affecting the US economy.

Here is a very interesting video from Reuters concerning the bin Laden/Pakistani intelligence service, and the government of Pakistan itself.

It is about 15 minutes long, but well worth the time. And just for fun, down on the list on the same page is a short video of the WW1 vet who just passed away too.

I am curious about a couple of things, if anyone has any ideas:

I am curious about the apparent squalor of the compound where bin Laden was living. I realize the SEALS sifted through everything, and there were a number of people living there making it difficult to keep organized, but it didn't just appear to be messy, it looked filthy. Bin Laden's housekeeping habits are of very little importance, but it surprises me.

And how is it possible that he was confronted without any apparent (to me) attempt to get away? It seems bizarre that there was not a better escape plan in place and he surely had enough time to have escaped. Any thoughts? Do you suppose they had just become complacent? Maybe they didn't have sophisticated technology because they didn't want to tip anyone off (although how they weren't tipped off anyway, I can't even fathom). Was the compound poorly designed, for all it cost, and escape, in the end, wasn't possible? Were the SEALS' actions relatively quiet and bin Laden wouldn't have heard them coming?

I am just surprised that he was surprised in this manner. I am not a conspiracy theorist, so I am not saying this because I doubt the veracity of the reports he is dead, but I am confused and surprised that it could have, in the end, happened this way.

Even the guy who is now famous for outing the raid on Twitter heard noise - did he just hear the aftermath, the helicopter being destroyed?

I wouldn't be surprised that much of the "mess" was from the SEAL team cleaning it out, they only had a few minutes after all and wanted to "get out of Dodge" before the Pakistani AF scrambled and intercepted their choppers on the way out. As to the guy who was blogging during the raid, he was alerted it seems from the sound of the 'flashbang" grenades going off, then of course the chopper that lost aerodynamic lift and clipped the tail rotor had to be "destroyed" with another explosive device.

Then of course when the big Chinook came it to extract the team and bin Laden's body that is a pretty big noisy machine. As to why he was caught so "unaware", he was in his upstairs bedroom, and likely had no way out. Poor planning, or just complacency which came from living in that compound for almost six years without detection. Just guesses on my part, but makes sense to me.
